Proverbs 20

NIRV 1 Wine causes you to make fun of others, and beer causes you to start fights. Anyone who is led down the wrong path by them is not wise. NIV 1 Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. NIRV 2 A king's anger is like a lion's roar. Anyone who makes him angry may lose his life. NIV 2 A king’s wrath strikes terror like the roar of a lion; those who anger him forfeit their lives. NIRV 3 Avoiding a fight brings honor to a man. But every foolish person is quick to argue. NIV 3 It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. NIRV 4 Anyone who refuses to work doesn't plow in the right season. When he looks for a crop at harvest time, he doesn't find it. NIV 4 Sluggards do not plow in season; so at harvest time they look but find nothing. NIRV 5 The purposes of a man's heart are like deep water. But a man who has understanding brings them out. NIV 5 The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out. NIRV 6 Many claim to have love that never fails. But who can find a faithful man? NIV 6 Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find? NIRV 7 Anyone who does what is right lives without blame. Blessed are his children after him. NIV 7 The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them. NIRV 8 A king sits on his throne to judge. He gets rid of all evil when he sees it. NIV 8 When a king sits on his throne to judge, he winnows out all evil with his eyes. NIRV 9 No one can say, "I have kept my heart pure. I'm clean. I haven't sinned." NIV 9 Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”? NIRV 10 The LORD hates two things. He hates weights that weigh things heavier or lighter than they really are. He also hates measures that measure things larger or smaller than they really are. NIV 10 Differing weights and differing measures— the LORD detests them both. NIRV 11 A child is known by his actions. He is known by whether his conduct is pure and right. NIV 11 Even small children are known by their actions, so is their conduct really pure and upright? NIRV 12 The LORD has made two things. He has made ears that hear. He has also made eyes that see. NIV 12 Ears that hear and eyes that see— the LORD has made them both. NIRV 13 Don't love sleep, or you will become poor. Stay awake, and you will have more food than you need. NIV 13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare. NIRV 14 "It's no good. It's no good!" says a buyer. Then off he goes and brags about what he bought. NIV 14 “It’s no good, it’s no good!” says the buyer— then goes off and boasts about the purchase. NIRV 15 There is gold. There are plenty of rubies. But lips that speak knowledge are a priceless jewel. NIV 15 Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel. NIRV 16 Take the coat of one who puts up money for what a stranger owes. Hold it until you get paid back if he does it for a woman who commits adultery. NIV 16 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger; hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider. NIRV 17 Food gained by cheating tastes sweet to a man. But he will end up with a mouth full of sand. NIV 17 Food gained by fraud tastes sweet, but one ends up with a mouth full of gravel. NIRV 18 Make plans by asking for guidance. If you go to war, get good advice. NIV 18 Plans are established by seeking advice; so if you wage war, obtain guidance. NIRV 19 A person who talks about others tells secrets. So avoid anyone who talks too much. NIV 19 A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much. NIRV 20 If anyone calls down curses on his father or mother, his lamp will be blown out in total darkness. NIV 20 If someone curses their father or mother, their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness. NIRV 21 Property you gain quickly at the beginning will not be blessed in the end. NIV 21 An inheritance claimed too soon will not be blessed at the end. NIRV 22 Don't say, "I'll get even with you for the wrong you did to me!" Wait for the Lord, and he will save you. NIV 22 Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the LORD, and he will avenge you. NIRV 23 The LORD hates weights that weigh things heavier or lighter than they really are. Scales that are not honest don't please him. NIV 23 The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him. NIRV 24 The LORD directs a man's steps. So how can anyone understand his own way? NIV 24 A person’s steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand their own way? NIRV 25 A man is trapped if he makes a hasty promise to God and only later thinks about what he said. NIV 25 It is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one’s vows. NIRV 26 A wise king gets rid of evil people. He runs the threshing wheel over them. NIV 26 A wise king winnows out the wicked; he drives the threshing wheel over them. NIRV 27 The lamp of the LORD searches a man's heart. It searches deep down inside him. NIV 27 The human spirit is the lamp of the LORD that sheds light on one’s inmost being. NIRV 28 Love and truth keep a king safe. Faithful love makes his throne secure. NIV 28 Love and faithfulness keep a king safe; through love his throne is made secure. NIRV 29 Young men are proud of their strength. Gray hair brings honor to old men. NIV 29 The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old. NIRV 30 Blows and wounds wash evil away. And beatings make you pure deep down inside. NIV 30 Blows and wounds scrub away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being.
