Psalm 140

LEB 1 Rescue me, O Yahweh, from evil men. Preserve me from violent men, NIV 1 Rescue me, LORD, from evildoers; protect me from the violent, LEB 2 who plan evil [things] in [their] heart. They stir up wars continually. NIV 2 who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day. LEB 3 They sharpen their tongue as [sharp as] a snake's; [the] venom of a viper [is] under their lips. Selah NIV 3 They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent’s; the poison of vipers is on their lips. LEB 4 Protect me, O Yahweh, from [the] hands of [the] wicked. Preserve me from violent men, who have planned to {make me stumble}. NIV 4 Keep me safe, LORD, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from the violent, who devise ways to trip my feet. LEB 5 [The] proud have hidden a trap for me, and cords. They have spread out a net along [the] {side} of [the] path. They have set snares for me. Selah NIV 5 The arrogant have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path. LEB 6 I say to Yahweh, "You [are] my God." Listen, O Yahweh, to the voice of my supplications. NIV 6 I say to the LORD, “You are my God.” Hear, LORD, my cry for mercy. LEB 7 O Yahweh, my Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in [the] day of battle. NIV 7 Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle. LEB 8 Do not grant, O Yahweh, [the] desires of [the] wicked. Do not allow [them] to attain their plan, lest they be exalted. Selah NIV 8 Do not grant the wicked their desires, LORD; do not let their plans succeed. LEB 9 [With respect to the] head of [those who] surround me, may the harm of their lips cover them. NIV 9 Those who surround me proudly rear their heads; may the mischief of their lips engulf them. LEB 10 Let burning coals fall on them; let them be dropped into the fire, into bottomless pits [from which] they cannot rise. NIV 10 May burning coals fall on them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. LEB 11 Do not let a {slanderer} be established in the land; as for [the] man of violence, let evil hunt him quickly. NIV 11 May slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down the violent. LEB 12 I know that Yahweh will maintain [the] cause of [the] afflicted, [and] justice for [the] needy. NIV 12 I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. LEB 13 Surely [the] righteous will give thanks to your name; [the] upright will dwell in your presence. NIV 13 Surely the righteous will praise your name, and the upright will live in your presence.
