NRSA 1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, NIV 1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— NRSA 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, NIV 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures NRSA 3 the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh NIV 3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, NRSA 4 and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, NIV 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. NRSA 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, NIV 5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake. NRSA 6 including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, NIV 6 And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. NRSA 7 To all God's beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. NRSA 8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed throughout the world. NIV 8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. NRSA 9 For God, whom I serve with my spirit by announcing the gospel of his Son, is my witness that without ceasing I remember you always in my prayers, NIV 9 God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you NRSA 10 asking that by God's will I may somehow at last succeed in coming to you. NIV 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you. NRSA 11 For I am longing to see you so that I may share with you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— NIV 11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— NRSA 12 or rather so that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. NIV 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. NRSA 13 I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as I have among the rest of the Gentiles. NIV 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. NRSA 14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish NIV 14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. NRSA 15 —hence my eagerness to proclaim the gospel to you also who are in Rome. NIV 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. NRSA 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. NIV 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. NRSA 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, "The one who is righteous will live by faith." NIV 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” NRSA 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of those who by their wickedness suppress the truth. NIV 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, NRSA 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. NIV 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. NRSA 20 Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse; NIV 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. NRSA 21 for though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless minds were darkened. NIV 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. NRSA 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools; NIV 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools NRSA 23 and they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human being or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles. NIV 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. NRSA 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the degrading of their bodies among themselves, NIV 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. NRSA 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. NIV 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. NRSA 26 For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, NIV 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. NRSA 27 and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error. NIV 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. NRSA 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind and to things that should not be done. NIV 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. NRSA 29 They were filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, covetousness, malice. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, craftiness, they are gossips, NIV 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, NRSA 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, rebellious toward parents, NIV 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; NRSA 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. NIV 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. NRSA 32 They know God's decree, that those who practice such things deserve to die—yet they not only do them but even applaud others who practice them. NIV 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
