1 Salmo 78<br />Salmo<br /> de Asaf.<br />Oh pueblo mío, escucha mis enseñanzas;<br />abre tus oídos a lo que digo,

2 porque te hablaré por medio de una parábola.<br />Te enseñaré lecciones escondidas de nuestro pasado,

3 historias que hemos oído y conocido,<br />que nos trasmitieron nuestros antepasados.

4 No les ocultaremos estas verdades a nuestros hijos;<br />a la próxima generación le contaremos<br />de las gloriosas obras del Señor<br />,<br />de su poder y de sus imponentes maravillas.

5 Pues emitió sus leyes a Jacob;<br />entregó sus enseñanzas a Israel.<br />Les ordenó a nuestros antepasados<br />que se las enseñaran a sus hijos,

6 para que la siguiente generación las conociera<br />—incluso los niños que aún no habían nacido—,<br />y ellos, a su vez, las enseñarán a sus propios hijos.

7 De modo que cada generación volviera a poner su esperanza en Dios<br />y no olvidara sus gloriosos milagros,<br />sino que obedeciera sus mandamientos.

8 Entonces no serán obstinados, rebeldes e infieles<br />como sus antepasados,<br />quienes se negaron a entregar su corazón a Dios.

9 Los guerreros de Efraín, aunque estaban armados con arcos,<br />dieron la espalda y huyeron el día de la batalla.

10 No cumplieron el pacto de Dios<br />y se negaron a vivir según sus enseñanzas.

11 Se olvidaron de lo que él había hecho,<br />de las grandes maravillas que les había mostrado,

12 de los milagros que hizo para sus antepasados<br />en la llanura de Zoán, en la tierra de Egipto.

13 Partió en dos el mar y los guió a cruzarlo,<br />¡mientras sostenía las aguas como si fueran una pared!

14 Durante el día los guiaba con una nube,<br />y toda la noche, con una columna de fuego.

15 Partió las rocas en el desierto para darles agua<br />como de un manantial burbujeante.

16 Hizo que de la roca brotaran corrientes de agua,<br />¡y que el agua fluyera como un río!

17 Sin embargo, ellos siguieron pecando contra él,<br />al rebelarse contra el Altísimo en el desierto.

18 Tercamente pusieron a prueba a Dios en sus corazones,<br />al exigirle la comida que tanto ansiaban.

19 Hasta hablaron en contra de Dios al decir:<br />«Dios no puede darnos comida en el desierto.

20 Por cierto, puede golpear una roca para que brote agua,<br />pero no puede darle pan y carne a su pueblo».

21 Cuando el Señor<br /> los oyó, se puso furioso;<br />el fuego de su ira se encendió contra Jacob.<br />Sí, su enojo aumentó contra Israel,

22 porque no le creyeron a Dios<br />ni confiaron en su cuidado.

23 Pero él ordenó que se abrieran los cielos;<br />abrió las puertas del cielo.

24 Hizo que lloviera maná para que comieran;<br />les dio pan del cielo.

25 ¡Se alimentaron con comida de ángeles!<br />Dios les dio todo lo que podían consumir.

26 Soltó el viento del oriente en los cielos<br />y guió al viento del sur con su gran poder.

27 ¡Hizo llover tanta carne como si fuera polvo<br />y cantidad de aves como la arena a la orilla del mar!

28 Hizo caer las aves dentro del campamento<br />y alrededor de sus carpas.

29 El pueblo comió hasta saciarse;<br />él les dio lo que se les antojaba.

30 Pero antes de que saciaran su antojo,<br />mientras aún tenían la comida en la boca,

31 la ira de Dios aumentó contra ellos,<br />e hirió de muerte a sus hombres más fuertes;<br />derribó a los mejores jóvenes de Israel.

32 Sin embargo, el pueblo siguió pecando;<br />a pesar de sus maravillas, se negaron a confiar en él.

33 Entonces, hizo que la vida de ellos terminara en fracaso,<br />y sus años en horror.

34 Cuando Dios comenzó a matarlos,<br />finalmente lo buscaron.<br />Se arrepintieron y tomaron en serio a Dios.

35 Entonces recordaron que Dios era su roca,<br />que el Dios Altísimo<br /> era su redentor.

36 Pero todo fue de dientes para afuera;<br />le mintieron con la lengua;

37 con el corazón no eran leales a él.<br />No cumplieron su pacto.

38 Sin embargo, él tuvo misericordia y perdonó sus pecados,<br />y no los destruyó a todos.<br />Muchas veces contuvo su enojo<br />y no desató su furia.

39 Se acordó de que eran simples mortales<br />que desaparecen como una ráfaga de viento que nunca vuelve.

40 Cuántas veces se rebelaron contra él en el desierto<br />y entristecieron su corazón en esa tierra seca y baldía.

41 Una y otra vez pusieron a prueba la paciencia de Dios<br />y provocaron al Santo de Israel.

42 No se acordaron de su poder<br />ni de cómo los rescató de sus enemigos.

43 No recordaron las señales milagrosas que hizo en Egipto<br />ni sus maravillas en la llanura de Zoán.

44 Pues él convirtió los ríos en sangre,<br />para que nadie pudiera beber de los arroyos.

45 Envió grandes enjambres de moscas para que los consumieran<br />y miles de ranas para que los arruinaran.

46 Les dio sus cultivos a las orugas;<br />las langostas consumieron sus cosechas.

47 Destruyó sus vides con granizo<br />y destrozó sus higueras con aguanieve.

48 Dejó su ganado a merced del granizo,<br />sus animales, abandonados a los rayos.

49 Desató sobre ellos su ira feroz,<br />toda su furia, su enojo y hostilidad.<br />Envió contra ellos<br />a un grupo de ángeles destructores.

50 Se enfureció contra ellos;<br />no perdonó la vida de los egipcios,<br />sino que los devastó con plagas.

51 Mató al hijo mayor de cada familia egipcia,<br />la flor de la juventud en toda la tierra de Egipto.

52 Pero guió a su propio pueblo como a un rebaño de ovejas,<br />los condujo a salvo a través del desierto.

53 Los protegió para que no tuvieran temor,<br />en cambio, sus enemigos quedaron cubiertos por el mar.

54 Los llevó a la frontera de la tierra santa,<br />a la tierra de colinas que había conquistado para ellos.

55 A su paso expulsó a las naciones de esa tierra,<br />la cual repartió por sorteo a su pueblo como herencia<br />y estableció a las tribus de Israel en sus hogares.

56 Pero ellos siguieron tentando al Dios Altísimo y rebelándose contra él;<br />no obedecieron sus leyes.

57 Le dieron la espalda y fueron tan infieles como sus padres;<br />eran tan poco fiables como un arco torcido.

58 Hicieron enojar a Dios al construir santuarios a otros dioses;<br />con sus ídolos lo pusieron celoso.

59 Cuando Dios los oyó, se enojó mucho,<br />y rechazó a Israel por completo.

60 Entonces abandonó su morada en Silo,<br />el tabernáculo donde había vivido en medio de su pueblo.

61 Permitió que el arca de su poder fuera capturada;<br />cedió su gloria a manos enemigas.

62 Entregó a su pueblo para que los masacraran a espada,<br />porque estaba muy enojado con su propio pueblo, su posesión más preciada.

63 A los jóvenes los mataron con fuego;<br />las muchachas murieron antes de entonar sus canciones de boda.

64 Masacraron a los sacerdotes,<br />y sus viudas no pudieron llorar su muerte.

65 Entonces el Señor se levantó como si despertara de un sueño,<br />como un guerrero que vuelve en sí de una borrachera.

66 Derrotó a sus enemigos en forma aplastante<br />y los mandó a la vergüenza eterna.

67 Pero rechazó a los descendientes de José;<br />no escogió a la tribu de Efraín.

68 En cambio, eligió a la tribu de Judá,<br />y al monte Sión, al cual amaba.

69 Allí construyó su santuario tan alto como los cielos,<br />tan sólido y perdurable como la tierra.

70 Escogió a su siervo David<br />y lo llamó del redil.

71 Tomó a David de donde cuidaba a las ovejas y a los corderos<br />y lo convirtió en pastor de los descendientes de Jacob:<br />de Israel, el pueblo de Dios;

72 lo cuidó con sinceridad de corazón<br />y lo dirigió con manos diestras.

1 My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.

2 I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old—

3 things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us.

4 We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.

5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children,

6 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.

7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.

8 They would not be like their ancestors— a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.

9 The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned back on the day of battle;

10 they did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law.

11 They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.

12 He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.

13 He divided the sea and led them through; he made the water stand up like a wall.

14 He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.

15 He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them water as abundant as the seas;

16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.

17 But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.

18 They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.

19 They spoke against God; they said, “Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?

20 True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”

21 When the LORD heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel,

22 for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance.

23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens;

24 he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.

25 Human beings ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.

26 He let loose the east wind from the heavens and by his power made the south wind blow.

27 He rained meat down on them like dust, birds like sand on the seashore.

28 He made them come down inside their camp, all around their tents.

29 They ate till they were gorged— he had given them what they craved.

30 But before they turned from what they craved, even while the food was still in their mouths,

31 God’s anger rose against them; he put to death the sturdiest among them, cutting down the young men of Israel.

32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.

33 So he ended their days in futility and their years in terror.

34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek him; they eagerly turned to him again.

35 They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer.

36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues;

37 their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant.

38 Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.

39 He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return.

40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the wasteland!

41 Again and again they put God to the test; they vexed the Holy One of Israel.

42 They did not remember his power— the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,

43 the day he displayed his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the region of Zoan.

44 He turned their river into blood; they could not drink from their streams.

45 He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them.

46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper, their produce to the locust.

47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore-figs with sleet.

48 He gave over their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning.

49 He unleashed against them his hot anger, his wrath, indignation and hostility— a band of destroying angels.

50 He prepared a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death but gave them over to the plague.

51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt, the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.

52 But he brought his people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the wilderness.

53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies.

54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land, to the hill country his right hand had taken.

55 He drove out nations before them and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance; he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

56 But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes.

57 Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow.

58 They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols.

59 When God heard them, he was furious; he rejected Israel completely.

60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent he had set up among humans.

61 He sent the ark of his might into captivity, his splendor into the hands of the enemy.

62 He gave his people over to the sword; he was furious with his inheritance.

63 Fire consumed their young men, and their young women had no wedding songs;

64 their priests were put to the sword, and their widows could not weep.

65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.

66 He beat back his enemies; he put them to everlasting shame.

67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph, he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;

68 but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.

69 He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever.

70 He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens;

71 from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance.

72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.
