The Message Bible

Titus 3

ESV 1 Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, MSG 1 Remind the people to respect the government and be law-abiding, always ready to lend a helping hand ESV 2 to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. MSG 2 No insults, no fights. God's people should be bighearted and courteous. ESV 3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. MSG 3 It wasn't so long ago that we ourselves were stupid and stubborn, dupes of sin, ordered every which way by our glands, going around with a chip on our shoulder, hated and hating back. ESV 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, MSG 4 But when God, our kind and loving Savior God, stepped in, ESV 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, MSG 5 he saved us from all that. It was all his doing; we had nothing to do with it. He gave us a good bath, and we came out of it new people, washed inside and out by the Holy Spirit. ESV 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, MSG 6 Our Savior Jesus poured out new life so generously. ESV 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. MSG 7 God's gift has restored our relationship with him and given us back our lives. And there's more life to come - an eternity of life! ESV 8 The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. MSG 8 You can count on this. ESV 9 But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. MSG 9 Stay away from mindless, pointless quarreling over genealogies and fine print in the law code. That gets you nowhere. ESV 10 As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, MSG 10 Warn a quarrelsome person once or twice, but then be done with him. ESV 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned. MSG 11 It's obvious that such a person is out of line, rebellious against God. By persisting in divisiveness he cuts himself off. ESV 12 When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. MSG 12 As soon as I send either Artemas or Tychicus to you, come immediately and meet me in Nicopolis. I've decided to spend the winter there. ESV 13 Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. MSG 13 Give Zenas the lawyer and Apollos a hearty send-off. Take good care of them. ESV 14 And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful. MSG 14 Our people have to learn to be diligent in their work so that all necessities are met (especially among the needy) and they don't end up with nothing to show for their lives. ESV 15 All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. MSG 15 All here want to be remembered to you. Say hello to our friends in the faith. Grace to all of you.
