Deuteronomy 20:1-10

NRS 1 When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots, an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them; for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up from the land of Egypt. NIV 1 When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. NRS 2 Before you engage in battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the troops, NIV 2 When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. NRS 3 and shall say to them: "Hear, O Israel! Today you are drawing near to do battle against your enemies. Do not lose heart, or be afraid, or panic, or be in dread of them; NIV 3 He shall say: “Hear, Israel: Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not panic or be terrified by them. NRS 4 for it is the Lord your God who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to give you victory." NIV 4 For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” NRS 5 Then the officials shall address the troops, saying, "Has anyone built a new house but not dedicated it? He should go back to his house, or he might die in the battle and another dedicate it. NIV 5 The officers shall say to the army: “Has anyone built a new house and not yet begun to live in it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else may begin to live in it. NRS 6 Has anyone planted a vineyard but not yet enjoyed its fruit? He should go back to his house, or he might die in the battle and another be first to enjoy its fruit. NIV 6 Has anyone planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else enjoy it. NRS 7 Has anyone become engaged to a woman but not yet married her? He should go back to his house, or he might die in the battle and another marry her." NIV 7 Has anyone become pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else marry her.” NRS 8 The officials shall continue to address the troops, saying, "Is anyone afraid or disheartened? He should go back to his house, or he might cause the heart of his comrades to melt like his own." NIV 8 Then the officers shall add, “Is anyone afraid or fainthearted? Let him go home so that his fellow soldiers will not become disheartened too.” NRS 9 When the officials have finished addressing the troops, then the commanders shall take charge of them. NIV 9 When the officers have finished speaking to the army, they shall appoint commanders over it. NRS 10 When you draw near to a town to fight against it, offer it terms of peace. NIV 10 When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace.
