1 El complot de Amán contra los judíos<br />Tiempo después, el rey Jerjes ascendió a Amán, hijo de Hamedata el agagueo, lo puso por encima de todos los demás nobles y lo convirtió en el funcionario más poderoso del imperio.

2 Todos los funcionarios del rey se inclinaban ante Amán en señal de respeto cada vez que él pasaba porque el rey lo había ordenado; pero Mardoqueo se negó a inclinarse ante él o a rendirle homenaje.

3 Entonces los funcionarios del palacio que estaban a la puerta del rey le preguntaron a Mardoqueo: «¿Por qué desobedeces la orden del rey?».

4 Todos los días le hablaban de lo mismo, pero aun así él se negaba a cumplir la orden. Entonces le informaron a Amán para saber si él toleraría la conducta de Mardoqueo, ya que Mardoqueo les había dicho que era judío.

5 Cuando Amán vio que Mardoqueo no se inclinaba ante él ni le rendía homenaje, se llenó de furia.

6 Como se había enterado de la nacionalidad de Mardoqueo, decidió que no bastaba con matar solamente a él. Entonces, buscó la forma de destruir a todos los judíos a lo largo y ancho del imperio de Jerjes.

7 Así que, en el mes de abril,<br /> durante el año doce del reinado de Jerjes, echaron el plan a suertes en presencia de Amán (las suertes se llamaban <br />) a fin de determinar cuál era el mejor día y mes para llevar a cabo el plan. Se escogió el día 7 de marzo, casi un año después.

8 Luego Amán se acercó al rey Jerjes y le dijo:<br />—Hay cierta raza dispersada por todas las provincias del imperio que se mantiene aislada de todas las demás. Tienen leyes diferentes de los demás pueblos y se niegan a obedecer las leyes del rey. Por lo tanto, no conviene a los intereses del rey que ese pueblo siga con vida.

9 Si al rey le agrada, emita un decreto para destruirlos, y yo donaré diez mil bolsas<br /> grandes de plata a los administradores del imperio para que los depositen en la tesorería del reino.

10 El rey estuvo de acuerdo y, para confirmar su decisión, se quitó del dedo el anillo con su sello oficial y se lo entregó a Amán, hijo de Hamedata el agagueo, el enemigo de los judíos.

11 El rey dijo: «Tanto el dinero como el pueblo son tuyos para que hagas con ellos lo que mejor te parezca».

1 After these events, King Xerxes honored Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, elevating him and giving him a seat of honor higher than that of all the other nobles.

2 All the royal officials at the king’s gate knelt down and paid honor to Haman, for the king had commanded this concerning him. But Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor.

3 Then the royal officials at the king’s gate asked Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the king’s command?”

4 Day after day they spoke to him but he refused to comply. Therefore they told Haman about it to see whether Mordecai’s behavior would be tolerated, for he had told them he was a Jew.

5 When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor, he was enraged.

6 Yet having learned who Mordecai’s people were, he scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai. Instead Haman looked for a way to destroy all Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the whole kingdom of Xerxes.

7 In the twelfth year of King Xerxes, in the first month, the month of Nisan, the pur (that is, the lot) was cast in the presence of Haman to select a day and month. And the lot fell on the twelfth month, the month of Adar.

8 Then Haman said to King Xerxes, “There is a certain people dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom who keep themselves separate. Their customs are different from those of all other people, and they do not obey the king’s laws; it is not in the king’s best interest to tolerate them.

9 If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will give ten thousand talents of silver to the king’s administrators for the royal treasury.”

10 So the king took his signet ring from his finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.

11 “Keep the money,” the king said to Haman, “and do with the people as you please.”
