1 Y alzando Jacob los ojos miró, y he aquí, Esaú venía y cuatrocientos hombres con él. Entonces dividió a los niños entre Lea y Raquel y las dos siervas.

Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.
2 Y puso a las siervas con sus hijos delante, y a Lea con sus hijos después, y a Raquel con José en último lugar;

He put the female servants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear.
3 y él se les adelantó, y se inclinó hasta el suelo siete veces hasta que llegó cerca de su hermano.

He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.
4 Entonces Esaú corrió a su encuentro y lo abrazó, y echándose sobre su cuello lo besó, y lloraron.

But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept.
5 Y alzó sus ojos y vio a las mujeres y a los niños, y dijo: ¿Quiénes son éstos que vienen contigo? Y él respondió: Son los hijos que Dios en su misericordia ha concedido a tu siervo.

Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked. Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.”
6 Entonces se acercaron las siervas con sus hijos, y se inclinaron.

Then the female servants and their children approached and bowed down.
7 Lea también se acercó con sus hijos, y se inclinaron; y después José se acercó con Raquel, y se inclinaron.

Next, Leah and her children came and bowed down. Last of all came Joseph and Rachel, and they too bowed down.
8 Y dijo Esaú: ¿Qué te propones con toda esta muchedumbre que he encontrado? Y él respondió: Hallar gracia ante los ojos de mi señor.

Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?” “To find favor in your eyes, my lord,” he said.
9 Pero Esaú dijo: Tengo bastante, hermano mío; sea tuyo lo que es tuyo.

But Esau said, “I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”
10 Mas Jacob respondió: No, te ruego que si ahora he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, tomes el presente de mi mano, porque veo tu rostro como uno ve el rostro de Dios, y favorablemente me has recibido.

“No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably.
11 Acepta, te ruego, el presente que se te ha traído, pues Dios me ha favorecido, y porque yo tengo mucho. Y le insistió, y él lo aceptó.

Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.” And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.
12 Entonces Esaú dijo: Pongámonos en marcha y vámonos; yo iré delante de ti.

Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”
13 Pero él le dijo: Mi señor sabe que los niños son tiernos, y que debo cuidar de las ovejas y las vacas que están criando. Si los apuramos mucho, en un solo día todos los rebaños morirán.

But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die.
14 Adelántese ahora mi señor a su siervo; y yo avanzaré sin prisa, al paso del ganado que va delante de mí, y al paso de los niños, hasta que llegue a mi señor en Seir.

So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.”
15 Y Esaú dijo: Permíteme dejarte parte de la gente que está conmigo. Pero él dijo: ¿Para qué? Halle yo gracia ante los ojos de mi señor.

Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.” “But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”
16 Aquel mismo día regresó Esaú por su camino a Seir;

So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.
17 y Jacob siguió hasta Sucot , y se edificó una casa, e hizo cobertizos para su ganado; por eso al lugar se le puso el nombre de Sucot.

Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.
18 Y Jacob llegó sin novedad a la ciudad de Siquem, que está en la tierra de Canaán, cuando vino de Padán-aram, y acampó frente a la ciudad.

After Jacob came from Paddan Aram, he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city.
19 Compró la parcela de campo donde había plantado su tienda de mano de los hijos de Hamor, padre de Siquem, por cien monedas,

For a hundred pieces of silver, he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent.
20 y levantó allí un altar, y lo llamó: El-Elohe-Israel .

There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.
