James 5:1-12

ESV 1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. NIV 1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. ESV 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. NIV 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. ESV 3 Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. NIV 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. ESV 4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. NIV 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. ESV 5 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. NIV 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. ESV 6 You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you. NIV 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you. ESV 7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. NIV 7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. ESV 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. NIV 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. ESV 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. NIV 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! ESV 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. NIV 10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. ESV 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. NIV 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. ESV 12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your "yes" be yes and your "no" be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. NIV 12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.
