1 La idolatría trae destrucción<br />¡Escucha la palabra que el Señor<br /> te dice, oh Israel!

2 Esto dice el Señor<br />:<br />«No te comportes como las otras naciones<br />que tratan de leer el futuro en las estrellas.<br />No tengas temor de sus predicciones,<br />aun cuando otras naciones se aterren por ellas.

3 Sus costumbres son vanas y necias.<br />Cortan un árbol y el artesano talla un ídolo.

4 Lo decoran con oro y plata<br />y luego lo aseguran con martillo y clavos<br />para que no se caiga.

5 ¡Sus dioses son como<br />inútiles espantapájaros en un campo de pepinos!<br />No pueden hablar<br />y necesitan que los lleven en los brazos porque no pueden caminar.<br />No tengan temor de semejantes dioses,<br />porque no pueden hacerles ningún daño, tampoco ningún bien».

6 ¡S<br />, no hay nadie como tú!<br />Pues eres grande y tu nombre está lleno de poder.

7 ¿Quién no te temería, oh Rey de las naciones?<br />¡Ese título te pertenece solo a ti!<br />Entre todos los sabios de la tierra<br />y en todos los reinos del mundo<br />no hay nadie como tú.

8 Los que rinden culto a ídolos son estúpidos y necios.<br />¡Las cosas a las que rinden culto están hechas de madera!

9 Traen láminas de plata desde Tarsis<br />y oro desde Ufaz,<br />y les entregan esos materiales a hábiles artesanos<br />que hacen sus ídolos.<br />Luego visten estos dioses con ropas de púrpura y azul real<br />hechas por sastres expertos.

10 Sin embargo, el Señor<br /> es el único Dios verdadero.<br />¡Él es el Dios viviente y el Rey eterno!<br />Toda la tierra tiembla ante su enojo;<br />las naciones no pueden hacerle frente a su ira.

11 Diles a los que rinden culto a otros dioses: «Sus supuestos dioses, que no hicieron los cielos y la tierra, desaparecerán de la tierra y de debajo de los cielos».

12 Dios hizo la tierra con su poder,<br />y la preserva con su sabiduría.<br />Con su propia inteligencia<br />desplegó los cielos.

13 Cuando habla en los truenos,<br />la lluvia desciende del cielo con estrépito.<br />Él hace que las nubes se levanten sobre la tierra.<br />Envía el relámpago junto con la lluvia,<br />y suelta el viento de sus depósitos.

14 ¡Toda la raza humana es necia y le falta conocimiento!<br />Los artesanos quedan deshonrados por los ídolos que hacen,<br />porque sus obras hechas con tanto esmero son un fraude.<br />Estos ídolos no tienen ni aliento ni poder.

15 Los ídolos son inútiles; ¡son mentiras ridículas!<br />En el día del juicio, todos serán destruidos.

16 ¡Pero el Dios de Israel<br /> no es ningún ídolo!<br />Él es el Creador de todo lo que existe,<br />incluido Israel, su posesión más preciada.<br />¡El Señor<br /> de los Ejércitos Celestiales es su nombre!

17 La destrucción que se acerca<br />Haz las maletas y prepárate para salir;<br />el sitio está por comenzar.

18 Pues esto dice el Señor<br />:<br />«De forma repentina echaré<br />a todos los que viven en esta tierra.<br />Derramaré sobre ustedes grandes dificultades,<br />y por fin sentirán mi enojo».

19 Mi herida es profunda<br />y grande mi dolor.<br />Mi enfermedad es incurable,<br />pero debo soportarla.

20 Mi casa está destruida,<br />y no queda nadie que me ayude a reconstruirla.<br />Se llevaron a mis hijos,<br />y nunca volveré a verlos.

21 Los pastores de mi pueblo han perdido la razón.<br />Ya no buscan la sabiduría del Señor<br />.<br />Por lo tanto, fracasan completamente<br />y sus rebaños andan dispersos.

22 ¡Escuchen! Oigan el terrible rugir de los ejércitos poderosos<br />mientras avanzan desde el norte.<br />Las ciudades de Judá serán destruidas<br />y se convertirán en guarida de chacales.

23 Oración de Jeremías<br />Yo sé, Señor<br />, que nuestra vida no nos pertenece;<br />no somos capaces de planear nuestro propio destino.

24 Así que corrígeme, Señor<br />, pero, por favor, sé tierno;<br />no me corrijas con enojo porque moriría.

25 Derrama tu ira sobre las naciones que se niegan a reconocerte,<br />sobre los pueblos que no invocan tu nombre.<br />Pues han devorado a tu pueblo Israel;<br />lo han devorado y consumido<br />y han hecho de la tierra un desierto desolado.

1 Hear what the LORD says to you, people of Israel.

2 This is what the LORD says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the heavens, though the nations are terrified by them.

3 For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.

4 They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.

5 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.”

6 No one is like you, LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.

7 Who should not fear you, King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.

8 They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols.

9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple— all made by skilled workers.

10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.

11 “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.’ ”

12 But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

13 When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

14 Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.

15 They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish.

16 He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the people of his inheritance— the LORD Almighty is his name.

17 Gather up your belongings to leave the land, you who live under siege.

18 For this is what the LORD says: “At this time I will hurl out those who live in this land; I will bring distress on them so that they may be captured.”

19 Woe to me because of my injury! My wound is incurable! Yet I said to myself, “This is my sickness, and I must endure it.”

20 My tent is destroyed; all its ropes are snapped. My children are gone from me and are no more; no one is left now to pitch my tent or to set up my shelter.

21 The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered.

22 Listen! The report is coming— a great commotion from the land of the north! It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals.

23 LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.

24 Discipline me, LORD, but only in due measure— not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing.

25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.
