John 13:1-20

ESV 1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. NIV 1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. ESV 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, NIV 2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. ESV 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, NIV 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; ESV 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. NIV 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. ESV 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. NIV 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. ESV 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" NIV 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” ESV 7 Jesus answered him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand." NIV 7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” ESV 8 Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me." NIV 8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” ESV 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" NIV 9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” ESV 10 Jesus said to him, "The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you." NIV 10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” ESV 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, "Not all of you are clean." NIV 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. ESV 12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? NIV 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. ESV 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. NIV 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. ESV 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. NIV 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. ESV 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. NIV 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. ESV 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. NIV 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. ESV 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. NIV 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. ESV 18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled,'He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.' NIV 18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turnedagainst me.’ ESV 19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. NIV 19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. ESV 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me." NIV 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
