4 Die beiden aber liefen zusammen, und der andere Jünger lief voraus, schneller als Petrus, und kam zuerst zu der Gruft;

Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5 und sich vornüberbückend, sieht er die leinenen Tücher liegen; doch ging er nicht hinein.

He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.
6 Da kommt Simon Petrus, ihm folgend, und ging hinein in die Gruft und sieht die leinenen Tücher liegen,

Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,
7 und das Schweißtuch, welches auf seinem Haupte war, nicht bei den leinenen Tüchern liegen, sondern besonders zusammengewickelt an einem Orte.

as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.
8 Dann ging nun auch der andere Jünger hinein, der zuerst zu der Gruft kam, und er sah und glaubte.

Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
9 Denn sie kannten die Schrift noch nicht, daß er aus den Toten auferstehen mußte.

(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
10 Es gingen nun die Jünger wieder heim.

Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.
11 Maria aber stand bei der Gruft, draußen, und weinte. Als sie nun weinte, bückte sie sich vornüber in die Gruft

Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
12 und sieht zwei Engel in weißen Kleidern sitzen, einen zu dem Haupte und einen zu den Füßen, wo der Leib Jesu gelegen hatte.

and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13 Und jene sagen zu ihr: Weib, was weinst du? Sie spricht zu ihnen: Weil sie meinen Herrn weggenommen, und ich nicht weiß, wo sie ihn hingelegt haben.

They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”
14 Als sie dies gesagt hatte, wandte sie sich zurück und sieht Jesum stehen; und sie wußte nicht, daß es Jesus sei.

At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
