1 Yé lù bā lì de érzi Yàbǐmǐlè dào le Shìjiàn jiàn tāde zhòng mǔ jiù , duì tāmen hé tā waì zǔ quán jiā de rén shuō ,

Abimelek son of Jerub-Baal went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and to all his mother’s clan,
2 Qǐng nǐmen wèn Shìjiàn de zhòngrén shuō , shì yé lù bā lì de zhòng zǐ qī shí rén dōu guǎnlǐ nǐmen hǎo ne . háishì yī rén guǎnlǐ nǐmen hǎo ne . nǐmen yòu yào jìniàn wǒ shì nǐmen de gǔròu .

“Ask all the citizens of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember, I am your flesh and blood.”

When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, “He is related to us.”

They gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels, who became his followers.

He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.

Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo gathered beside the great tree at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.

When Jotham was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted to them, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.
8 Yǒu yī shí shùmù yào gāo yī shù wèi wáng , guǎnlǐ tāmen , jiù qù duì gǎnlǎn shù shuō , qǐng nǐ zuò wǒmen de wáng.

One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’
9 Gǎnlǎn shù huídá shuō , wǒ qǐ kĕn zhǐ zhù gōng fèng shén hé zūnzhòng rén de yóu , piāo yáo zaì zhòng shù zhī shàng ne .

“But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’
10 Shùmù duì wúhuāguǒ shù shuō , qǐng nǐ lái zuò wǒmen de wáng .

“Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’
11 Wúhuāguǒ shù huídá shuō , wǒ qǐ kĕn zhǐ zhù suǒ jié tián mĕi de guǒzi , piāo yáo zaì zhòng shù zhī shàng ne .

“But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’
12 Shùmù duì pútàoshù shuō , qǐng nǐ lái zuò wǒmen de wáng .

“Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’
13 Pútàoshù huídá shuō , wǒ qǐ kĕn zhǐ zhù shǐ shén hé rén xǐlè de xīn jiǔ , piāo yáo zaì zhòng shù zhī shàng ne .

“But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’
14 Zhòng shù duì jīngjí shuō , qǐng nǐ lái zuò wǒmen de wáng .

“Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’
15 Jīngjí huídá shuō , nǐmen ruò chéng chéngshí shí dì gāo wǒ wèi wáng , jiù yào tóu zaì wǒde yīn xià . bù rán , yuàn huǒ cóng jīngjí lǐ chūlai , shāo miè Lìbānèn de xiāng bǎi shù .

“The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, then let fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’
16 Xiànzaì nǐmen lì Yàbǐmǐlè wèi wáng , ruò àn chéngshí zhèngzhí shàn dāi yé lù bāLìhé tāde quán jiā , zhè jiù shì chóu tāde laó .

“Have you acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves?
17 Cóng qián wǒ fù mào sǐ wèi nǐmen zhēng zhàn , jiù le nǐmen tuōlí Mǐdiàn rén de shǒu .

Remember that my father fought for you and risked his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian.
18 Nǐmen rújīn qǐlai gōngjī wǒde fù jiā , jiāng tā zhòng zǐ qī shí rén shā zaì yī kuaì pánshí shàng , yòu lì tā bìnǚ suǒ shēng de érzi Yàbǐmǐlè wèi Shìjiàn rén de wáng . tā yuán shì nǐmen de dìxiōng .

But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is related to you.
19 Nǐmen rújīn ruò àn chéngshí zhèngzhí dāi yé lù bāLìhé tāde jiā , jiù kĕ yīn Yàbǐmǐlè dé huānlè , tā yĕ kĕ yīn nǐmen dé huānlè .

So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today? If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too!
20 Bù rán , yuàn huǒ cóng Yàbǐmǐlè fāchū , shāo miè Shìjiàn rén hé mǐ luó zhòngrén , yòu yuàn huǒ cóng Shìjiàn rén hé mǐ luó rén zhōng chūlai , shāo miè Yàbǐmǐlè .

But if you have not, let fire come out from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!”
21 Yuētǎn yīn pà tā dìxiōng Yàbǐmǐlè , jiù taópǎo , lái dào Bǐĕr , zhù zaì nàli .

Then Jotham fled, escaping to Beer, and he lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.

After Abimelek had governed Israel three years,

God stirred up animosity between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek.

God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons, the shedding of their blood, might be avenged on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him murder his brothers.
25 Shìjiàn rén zaì shāndǐng shàng shè máifu , dĕnghòu Yàbǐmǐlè . fán cóng tāmen nàli jīngguò de rén , tāmen jiù qiǎngduó . yǒu rén jiāng zhè shì gàosu Yàbǐmǐlè .

In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelek.
26 Yǐ biéde érzi Jiālè hé tāde dìxiōng lái dào Shìjiàn , Shìjiàn rén dōu xìn kào tā .

Now Gaal son of Ebed moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him.
27 Shìjiàn rén chū chéng dào tiánjiān qù , zhāi xià pútào , chuaì jiǔ , shè bǎi yán yàn , jìn tāmen shén de miào zhōng chī hē , zhòuzǔ Yàbǐmǐlè .

After they had gone out into the fields and gathered the grapes and trodden them, they held a festival in the temple of their god. While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek.
28 Yǐ biéde érzi Jiālè shuō , Yàbǐmǐlè shì shuí . Shìjiàn shì shuí . shǐ wǒmen fúshì tā ne . tā bú shì yé lù bā lì de érzi ma . tāde bāngshou bú shì xī bù lè ma . nǐmen kĕyǐ fúshì Shìjiàn de fùqin Hāmā de hòuyì . wǒmen wèihé fúshì Yàbǐmǐlè ne

Then Gaal son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelek, and why should we Shechemites be subject to him? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son, and isn’t Zebul his deputy? Serve the family of Hamor, Shechem’s father! Why should we serve Abimelek?
29 Wéi yuàn zhè mín guī wǒde shǒu xià , wǒ jiù chúdiào Yàbǐmǐlè . Jiālè yòu duì Yàbǐmǐlè shuō , zēngtiān nǐde jūn bīng chūlai ba .

If only this people were under my command! Then I would get rid of him. I would say to Abimelek, ‘Call out your whole army!’ ”
30 Yì zǎi xī bù lè tīngjian yǐ biéde érzi Jiālè de huà , jiù fānù ,

When Zebul the governor of the city heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, he was very angry.
31 Qiāoqiāo de dǎfa rén qù jiàn Yàbǐmǐlè , shuō , yǐ biéde érzi Jiālè hé tāde dìxiōng dào le Shìjiàn , shān huò chéng zhōng de mín gōngjī nǐ .

Under cover he sent messengers to Abimelek, saying, “Gaal son of Ebed and his clan have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you.
32 Xiànzaì nǐ hé gēnsuí nǐde rén jīnyè qǐlai , zaì tiánjiān máifu .

Now then, during the night you and your men should come and lie in wait in the fields.
33 Dào zǎochen taìyáng yī chū , nǐ jiù qǐlai chuǎng chéng . Jiālè hé gēnsuí tāde rén chūlai gōngjī nǐde shíhou , nǐ biàn xiàng tāmen jiàn jī ér zuò .

In the morning at sunrise, advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, seize the opportunity to attack them.”
34 Yúshì , Yàbǐmǐlè hé gēnsuí tāde zhòngrén yè jiān qǐlai , fēn zuò sì duì , máifu dĕnghòu Shìjiàn rén .

So Abimelek and all his troops set out by night and took up concealed positions near Shechem in four companies.
35 Yǐ biéde érzi Jiālè chū qù , zhàn zaì chéng ménkǒu . Yàbǐmǐlè hé gēnsuí tāde rén cóng máifu zhī chù qǐlai .

Now Gaal son of Ebed had gone out and was standing at the entrance of the city gate just as Abimelek and his troops came out from their hiding place.
36 Jiālè kànjian nàxiē rén , jiù duì xī bù lè shuō , kàn nǎ , yǒu rén cóng shāndǐng shàng xià lái le . xī bù lè shuō , nǐ kànjian shān de yǐng zǐ , yǐwéi shì rén .

When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!” Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”
37 Jiālè yòu shuō , kàn nǎ , yǒu rén cóng gāo chù xià lái , yòu yǒu yī duì cóng mǐ è ní ní xiàngshù de lù shàng ér lái .

But Gaal spoke up again: “Look, people are coming down from the central hill, and a company is coming from the direction of the diviners’ tree.”
38 Xī bù lè duì tā shuō , nǐ céng shuō , Yàbǐmǐlè shì shuí , jiào wǒmen fúshì tā . nǐ suǒ kuā de kǒu zaì nǎli ne . zhè bú shì nǐ suǒ miǎoshì de mín ma . nǐ xiànzaì chū qù , yǔ tāmen jiāo zhàn ba .

Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your big talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelek that we should be subject to him?’ Aren’t these the men you ridiculed? Go out and fight them!”
39 Yúshì Jiālè shuaìlǐng Shìjiàn rén chū qù , yǔ Yàbǐmǐlè jiāo zhàn .

So Gaal led out the citizens of Shechem and fought Abimelek.
40 Yàbǐmǐlè zhuīgǎn Jiālè . Jiālè zaì tā miànqián taópǎo , yǒu xǔduō shòushāng pú dǎo de , zhídào chéng mén .

Abimelek chased him all the way to the entrance of the gate, and many were killed as they fled.
41 Yàbǐmǐlè zhù zaì yà lǔ mǎ . xī bù lè gǎn chū Jiālè hé tā dìxiōng , bù zhún tāmen zhù zaì Shìjiàn .

Then Abimelek stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his clan out of Shechem.
42 Cì rì , mín chū dào tiánjiān , yǒu rén gàosu Yàbǐmǐlè .

The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and this was reported to Abimelek.
43 Tā jiù bǎ tāde rén fēn zuò sān duì , máifu zaì tiánjiān , kànjian Shìjiàn rén cóng chéng lǐ chūlai , jiù qǐlai jī shā tāmen .

So he took his men, divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose to attack them.
44 Yàbǐmǐlè hé gēnsuí tāde yī duì xiàng qián chuǎng qù , zhàn zaì chéng ménkǒu . nà liǎng duì zhí chuǎng dào tiánjiān , jī shā le zhòngrén .

Abimelek and the companies with him rushed forward to a position at the entrance of the city gate. Then two companies attacked those in the fields and struck them down.
45 Yàbǐmǐlè zhĕngtiān gōngdǎ chéng , jiāng chéng duó qǔ , shā le qízhōng de jūmín , jiāng chéng chāihuǐ , sǎ shàng le yán .

All that day Abimelek pressed his attack against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he destroyed the city and scattered salt over it.
46 Shìjiàn lóu de rén tīngjian le , jiù duǒ rù bā lì Bǐlì tǔ miào de wèi suǒ .

On hearing this, the citizens in the tower of Shechem went into the stronghold of the temple of El-Berith.
47 Yǒu rén gàosu Yàbǐmǐlè shuō , Shìjiàn lóu de rén dōu jù zaì yī chù .

When Abimelek heard that they had assembled there,
48 Yàbǐmǐlè hé gēnsuí tāde rén jiù dōu shàng sǎ men shān . Yàbǐmǐlè shǒu ná fǔzi , kǎn xià yī gēn shùzhī , káng zaì jiān shàng , duì gēnsuí tāde rén shuō , nǐmen kàn wǒ suǒ xíng de , yĕ dāng gǎnjǐn zhàoyàng xíng .

he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon. He took an ax and cut off some branches, which he lifted to his shoulders. He ordered the men with him, “Quick! Do what you have seen me do!”
49 Zhòngrén jiù gè kǎn yī zhī , gēnsuí Yàbǐmǐlè , bǎ shùzhī duī zaì wèi suǒ de sìwéi , fàng huǒshào le wèi suǒ , yǐzhì Shìjiàn lóu de rén dōu sǐ le , nánnǚ yuē yǒu yī qiā .

So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the stronghold and set it on fire with the people still inside. So all the people in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women, also died.
50 Yàbǐmǐlè dào dī/tí beì sī , xiàng tí beì sī ān yíng , jiù gōng qǔ le nà chéng .

Next Abimelek went to Thebez and besieged it and captured it.
51 Chéng zhōng yǒu yī zuò jiāngù de lóu . chéng lǐ de zhòngrén , wúlùn nánnǚ , dōu taó jìn lóu qù , guān shàng mén , shàng le lóu dǐng .

Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women—all the people of the city—had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof.
52 Yàbǐmǐlè dào le lóu qián gōngdǎ , āijìn lóu mén , yào yòng huǒ fùnshāo .

Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire,
53 Yǒu yī gè fùrén bǎ yī kuaì shàng mòshí pāo zaì Yàbǐmǐlè de tóu shàng , dǎpò le tāde nǎo gú .

a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.
54 Tā jiù jímáng hǎnjiào ná tā bīngqì de shàonián rén , duì tā shuō , bá chū nǐde dāo lái , shā le wǒ ba . miǎndé rén yìlùn wǒ shuō , tā wèi yī gè fùrén suǒ shā . yúshì shàonián rén bǎ tā cī tòu , tā jiù sǐ le .

Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me, so that they can’t say, ‘A woman killed him.’ ” So his servant ran him through, and he died.
55 Yǐsèliè rén jiàn Yàbǐmǐlè sǐ le , biàn gè huí zìjǐ de dìfang qù le .

When the Israelites saw that Abimelek was dead, they went home.
56 Zhèyàng , shén bàoyìng Yàbǐmǐlè xiàng tā fùqin suǒ xíng de è , jiù shì shā le dìxiōng qī shí gèrén de è .

Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers.
57 Shìjiàn rén de yīqiè è , shén yĕ dōu bàoyìng zaì tāmen tóu shàng . yé lù bā lì de érzi Yuētǎn de zhòuzǔ guī dào tāmen shēnshang le .

God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness. The curse of Jotham son of Jerub-Baal came on them.
