ESV 13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, NIV 13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. ESV 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. NIV 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. ESV 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. NIV 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; ESV 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. NIV 16 but they were kept from recognizing him. ESV 17 And he said to them, "What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood still, looking sad. NIV 17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”They stood still, their faces downcast. ESV 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" NIV 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” ESV 19 And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, NIV 19 “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. ESV 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. NIV 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; ESV 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. NIV 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. ESV 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, NIV 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning ESV 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. NIV 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. ESV 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see." NIV 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” ESV 25 And he said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! NIV 25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! ESV 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" NIV 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” ESV 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. NIV 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. ESV 28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, NIV 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. ESV 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them. NIV 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. ESV 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. NIV 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. ESV 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. NIV 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. ESV 32 They said to each other, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?" NIV 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” ESV 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, NIV 33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together ESV 34 saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" NIV 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” ESV 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. NIV 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
