Luke 4:1-13

CEB 1 Jesus returned from the Jordan River full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. NRS 1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, CEB 2 There he was tempted for forty days by the devil. He ate nothing during those days and afterward Jesus was starving. NRS 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. CEB 3 The devil said to him, "Since you are God's Son, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." NRS 3 The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread." CEB 4 Jesus replied, "It's written, People won't live only by bread." NRS 4 Jesus answered him, "It is written, "One does not live by bread alone.' " CEB 5 Next the devil led him to a high place and showed him in a single instant all the kingdoms of the world. NRS 5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. CEB 6 The devil said, "I will give you this whole domain and the glory of all these kingdoms. It's been entrusted to me and I can give it to anyone I want. NRS 6 And the devil said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. CEB 7 Therefore, if you will worship me, it will all be yours." NRS 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours." CEB 8 Jesus answered, "It's written, You will worship the Lord your God and serve only him." NRS 8 Jesus answered him, "It is written, "Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.' " CEB 9 The devil brought him into Jerusalem and stood him at the highest point of the temple. He said to him, "Since you are God's Son, throw yourself down from here; NRS 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, CEB 10 for it's written: He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you NRS 10 for it is written, "He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' CEB 11 and they will take you up in their hands so that you won't hit your foot on a stone." NRS 11 and "On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.' " CEB 12 Jesus answered, "It's been said, Don't test the Lord your God." NRS 12 Jesus answered him, "It is said, "Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' " CEB 13 After finishing every temptation, the devil departed from him until the next opportunity. NRS 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.
