Luke 8:26-56

GNT 26 Jesus and his disciples sailed on over to the territory of Gerasa, which is across the lake from Galilee. NIV 26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. GNT 27 As Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a man from the town who had demons in him. For a long time this man had gone without clothes and would not stay at home, but spent his time in the burial caves. NIV 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. GNT 28 When he saw Jesus, he gave a loud cry, threw himself down at his feet, and shouted, "Jesus, Son of the Most High God! What do you want with me? I beg you, don't punish me!" NIV 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” GNT 29 He said this because Jesus had ordered the evil spirit to go out of him. Many times it had seized him, and even though he was kept a prisoner, his hands and feet tied with chains, he would break the chains and be driven by the demon out into the desert. NIV 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. GNT 30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is "Mob,' " he answered - because many demons had gone into him. NIV 30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. GNT 31 The demons begged Jesus not to send them into the abyss. NIV 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. GNT 32 There was a large herd of pigs near by, feeding on a hillside. So the demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he let them. NIV 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. GNT 33 They went out of the man and into the pigs. The whole herd rushed down the side of the cliff into the lake and was drowned. NIV 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. GNT 34 The men who had been taking care of the pigs saw what happened, so they ran off and spread the news in the town and among the farms. NIV 34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, GNT 35 People went out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were all afraid. NIV 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. GNT 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the man had been cured. NIV 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. GNT 37 Then all the people from that territory asked Jesus to go away, because they were terribly afraid. So Jesus got into the boat and left. NIV 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. GNT 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged Jesus, "Let me go with you." But Jesus sent him away, saying, NIV 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, GNT 39 "Go back home and tell what God has done for you." The man went through the town, telling what Jesus had done for him. NIV 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him. GNT 40 When Jesus returned to the other side of the lake, the people welcomed him, because they had all been waiting for him. NIV 40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. GNT 41 Then a man named Jairus arrived; he was an official in the local synagogue. He threw himself down at Jesus' feet and begged him to go to his home, NIV 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house GNT 42 because his only daughter, who was twelve years old, was dying. As Jesus went along, the people were crowding him from every side. NIV 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. GNT 43 Among them was a woman who had suffered from severe bleeding for twelve years; she had spent all she had on doctors, but no one had been able to cure her. NIV 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. GNT 44 She came up in the crowd behind Jesus and touched the edge of his cloak, and her bleeding stopped at once. NIV 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. GNT 45 Jesus asked, "Who touched me?" Everyone denied it, and Peter said, "Master, the people are all around you and crowding in on you." NIV 45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” GNT 46 But Jesus said, "Someone touched me, for I knew it when power went out of me." NIV 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” GNT 47 The woman saw that she had been found out, so she came trembling and threw herself at Jesus' feet. There in front of everybody, she told him why she had touched him and how she had been healed at once. NIV 47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. GNT 48 Jesus said to her, "My daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace." NIV 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” GNT 49 While Jesus was saying this, a messenger came from the official's house. "Your daughter has died," he told Jairus; "don't bother the Teacher any longer." NIV 49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.” GNT 50 But Jesus heard it and said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; only believe, and she will be well." NIV 50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” GNT 51 When he arrived at the house, he would not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother. NIV 51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. GNT 52 Everyone there was crying and mourning for the child. Jesus said, "Don't cry; the child is not dead - she is only sleeping!"
