CEB 17 As Jesus continued down the road, a man ran up, knelt before him, and asked, "Good Teacher, what must I do to obtain eternal life?" NRS 17 As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" CEB 18 Jesus replied, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except the one God. NRS 18 Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. CEB 19 You know the commandments: Don't commit murder. Don't commit adultery. Don't steal. Don't give false testimony. Don't cheat. Honor your father and mother." NRS 19 You know the commandments: "You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.' " CEB 20 "Teacher," he responded, "I've kept all of these things since I was a boy." NRS 20 He said to him, "Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth." CEB 21 Jesus looked at him carefully and loved him. He said, "You are lacking one thing. Go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor. Then you will have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me." NRS 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." CEB 22 But the man was dismayed at this statement and went away saddened, because he had many possessions. NRS 22 When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. CEB 23 Looking around, Jesus said to his disciples, "It will be very hard for the wealthy to enter God's kingdom!" NRS 23 Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" CEB 24 His words startled the disciples, so Jesus told them again, "Children, it's difficult to enter God's kingdom! NRS 24 And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! CEB 25 It's easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter God's kingdom." NRS 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." CEB 26 They were shocked even more and said to each other, "Then who can be saved?" NRS 26 They were greatly astounded and said to one another, "Then who can be saved?" CEB 27 Jesus looked at them carefully and said, "It's impossible with human beings, but not with God. All things are possible for God." NRS 27 Jesus looked at them and said, "For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible." CEB 28 Peter said to him, "Look, we've left everything and followed you." NRS 28 Peter began to say to him, "Look, we have left everything and followed you." CEB 29 Jesus said, "I assure you that anyone who has left house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, or farms because of me and because of the good news NRS 29 Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, CEB 30 will receive one hundred times as much now in this life—houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and farms (with harassment)—and in the coming age, eternal life. NRS 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. CEB 31 But many who are first will be last. And many who are last will be first." NRS 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."
