CEB 38 As he was teaching, he said, "Watch out for the legal experts. They like to walk around in long robes. They want to be greeted with honor in the markets. NRS 38 As he taught, he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, CEB 39 They long for places of honor in the synagogues and at banquets. NRS 39 and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! CEB 40 They are the ones who cheat widows out of their homes, and to show off they say long prayers. They will be judged most harshly." NRS 40 They devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." CEB 41 Jesus sat across from the collection box for the temple treasury and observed how the crowd gave their money. Many rich people were throwing in lots of money. NRS 41 He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. CEB 42 One poor widow came forward and put in two small copper coins worth a penny. NRS 42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. CEB 43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I assure you that this poor widow has put in more than everyone who's been putting money in the treasury. NRS 43 Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. CEB 44 All of them are giving out of their spare change. But she from her hopeless poverty has given everything she had, even what she needed to live on." NRS 44 For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."
