NIV

1 They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
1 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 When he had come out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
3 who had his dwelling in the tombs. Nobody could bind him any more, not even with chains,
3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.
4 because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the fetters broken in pieces. Nobody had the strength to tame him.
4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 Always, night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones.
5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed down to him,
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
7 and crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, don't torment me."
7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”
8 For he said to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 He asked him, "What is your name?" He said to him, "My name is Legion, for we are many."
9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
10 He begged him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 Now there was on the mountainside a great herd of pigs feeding.
11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
12 All the demons begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs, that we may enter into them."
12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”
13 At once Jesus gave them permission. The unclean spirits came out and entered into the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and they were drowned in the sea.
13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Those who fed them fled, and told it in the city and in the country. The people came to see what it was that had happened.
14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
15 They came to Jesus, and saw him who was possessed by demons sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, even him who had the legion; and they were afraid.
15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
16 Those who saw it declared to them how it happened to him who was possessed by demons, and about the pigs.
16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well.
17 They began to beg him to depart from their borders.
17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18 As he was entering into the boat, he who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him.
18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
19 He didn't allow him, but said to him, "Go to your house, to your friends, and tell them how the Lord has done great things for you, and how he had mercy on you."
19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
20 He went his way, and began to proclaim in Decapolis how Jesus had done great things for him, and everyone marveled.
20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
