Mark 5:21-43

CEB 21 Jesus crossed the lake again, and on the other side a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. NRS 21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. CEB 22 Jairus, one of the synagogue leaders, came forward. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet NRS 22 Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet CEB 23 and pleaded with him, "My daughter is about to die. Please, come and place your hands on her so that she can be healed and live." NRS 23 and begged him repeatedly, "My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live." CEB 24 So Jesus went with him. A swarm of people were following Jesus, crowding in on him. NRS 24 So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. CEB 25 A woman was there who had been bleeding for twelve years. NRS 25 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. CEB 26 She had suffered a lot under the care of many doctors, and had spent everything she had without getting any better. In fact, she had gotten worse. NRS 26 She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. CEB 27 Because she had heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothes. NRS 27 She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, CEB 28 She was thinking, If I can just touch his clothes, I'll be healed. NRS 28 for she said, "If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well." CEB 29 Her bleeding stopped immediately, and she sensed in her body that her illness had been healed. NRS 29 Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. CEB 30 At that very moment, Jesus recognized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?" NRS 30 Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?" CEB 31 His disciples said to him, "Don't you see the crowd pressing against you? Yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?'" NRS 31 And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, "Who touched me?' " CEB 32 But Jesus looked around carefully to see who had done it. NRS 32 He looked all around to see who had done it. CEB 33 The woman, full of fear and trembling, came forward. Knowing what had happened to her, she fell down in front of Jesus and told him the whole truth. NRS 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. CEB 34 He responded, "Daughter, your faith has healed you; go in peace, healed from your disease." NRS 34 He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease." CEB 35 While Jesus was still speaking with her, messengers came from the synagogue leader's house, saying to Jairus, "Your daughter has died. Why bother the teacher any longer?" NRS 35 While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader's house to say, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?" CEB 36 But Jesus overheard their report and said to the synagogue leader, "Don't be afraid; just keep trusting." NRS 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, "Do not fear, only believe." CEB 37 He didn't allow anyone to follow him except Peter, James, and John, James' brother. NRS 37 He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. CEB 38 They came to the synagogue leader's house, and he saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. NRS 38 When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. CEB 39 He went in and said to them, "What's all this commotion and crying about? The child isn't dead. She's only sleeping." NRS 39 When he had entered, he said to them, "Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping." CEB 40 They laughed at him, but he threw them all out. Then, taking the child's parents and his disciples with him, he went to the room where the child was. NRS 40 And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. CEB 41 Taking her hand, he said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Young woman, get up." NRS 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha cum," which means, "Little girl, get up!" CEB 42 Suddenly the young woman got up and began to walk around. She was 12 years old. They were shocked! NRS 42 And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. CEB 43 He gave them strict orders that no one should know what had happened. Then he told them to give her something to eat. NRS 43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
