WEB 14 King Herod heard this, for his name had become known, and he said, "John the Baptizer has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers work in him." NIV 14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” WEB 15 But others said, "It is Elijah." Others said, "It is the Prophet, or like one of the prophets." NIV 15 Others said, “He is Elijah.” And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.” WEB 16 But Herod, when he heard this, said, "This is John, whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead." NIV 16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!” WEB 17 For Herod himself had sent out and laid hold on John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, for he had married her. NIV 17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. WEB 18 For John said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." NIV 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” WEB 19 Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him, but she couldn't, NIV 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, WEB 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly. NIV 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled ; yet he liked to listen to him. WEB 21 When a convenient day had come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper for his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee; NIV 21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. WEB 22 and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those reclining with him. The king said to the young lady, "Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you." NIV 22 When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” WEB 23 He swore to her, "Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom." NIV 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.” WEB 24 She went out, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" She said, "The head of John the Baptizer." NIV 24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptist,” she answered. WEB 25 She came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptizer on a platter." NIV 25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” WEB 26 The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of his dinner guests, he didn't wish to refuse her. NIV 26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. WEB 27 Immediately the king sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring John's head, and he went and beheaded him in the prison, NIV 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, WEB 28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.
