ESV 20 Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. MSG 20 Next Jesus let fly on the cities where he had worked the hardest but whose people had responded the least, shrugging their shoulders and going their own way. ESV 21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. MSG 21 "Doom to you, Chorazin! Doom, Bethsaida! If Tyre and Sidon had seen half of the powerful miracles you have seen, they would have been on their knees in a minute. ESV 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. MSG 22 At Judgment Day they'll get off easy compared to you. ESV 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. MSG 23 And Capernaum! With all your peacock strutting, you are going to end up in the abyss. If the people of Sodom had had your chances, the city would still be around. ESV 24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you." MSG 24 At Judgment Day they'll get off easy compared to you." ESV 25 At that time Jesus declared, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; MSG 25 Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer: "Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people. ESV 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. MSG 26 Yes, Father, that's the way you like to work." ESV 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. MSG 27 Jesus resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly. "The Father has given me all these things to do and say. This is a unique Father-Son operation, coming out of Father and Son intimacies and knowledge. No one knows the Son the way the Father does, nor the Father the way the Son does. But I'm not keeping it to myself; I'm ready to go over it line by line with anyone willing to listen. ESV 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. MSG 28 "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. ESV 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. MSG 29 Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. ESV 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." MSG 30 Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."
