They asked him, NIV 1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, NLT 2 “Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.” NIV 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” NLT 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? NIV 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? NIV 8 “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. NLT 9 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ ” NIV 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’”
