Matthew 17:1-20

ESV 1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. MSG 1 Six days later, three of them saw that glory. Jesus took Peter and the brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain. ESV 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. MSG 2 His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. Sunlight poured from his face. His clothes were filled with light. ESV 3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. MSG 3 Then they realized that Moses and Elijah were also there in deep conversation with him. ESV 4 And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." MSG 4 Peter broke in, "Master, this is a great moment! What would you think if I built three memorials here on the mountain - one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah?" ESV 5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." MSG 5 While he was going on like this, babbling, a light-radiant cloud enveloped them, and sounding from deep in the cloud a voice: "This is my Son, marked by my love, focus of my delight. Listen to him." ESV 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. MSG 6 When the disciples heard it, they fell flat on their faces, scared to death. ESV 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." MSG 7 But Jesus came over and touched them. "Don't be afraid." ESV 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. MSG 8 When they opened their eyes and looked around all they saw was Jesus, only Jesus. ESV 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." MSG 9 Coming down the mountain, Jesus swore them to secrecy. "Don't breathe a word of what you've seen. After the Son of Man is raised from the dead, you are free to talk." ESV 10 And the disciples asked him, "Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?" MSG 10 The disciples, meanwhile, were asking questions. "Why do the religion scholars say that Elijah has to come first?" ESV 11 He answered, "Elijah does come, and he will restore all things. MSG 11 Jesus answered, "Elijah does come and get everything ready. ESV 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands." MSG 12 I'm telling you, Elijah has already come but they didn't know him when they saw him. They treated him like dirt, the same way they are about to treat the Son of Man." ESV 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist. MSG 13 That's when the disciples realized that all along he had been talking about John the Baptizer. ESV 14 And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, MSG 14 At the bottom of the mountain, they were met by a crowd of waiting people. As they approached, a man came out of the crowd and fell to his knees begging, ESV 15 said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. MSG 15 "Master, have mercy on my son. He goes out of his mind and suffers terribly, falling into seizures. Frequently he is pitched into the fire, other times into the river. ESV 16 And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." MSG 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could do nothing for him." ESV 17 And Jesus answered, "O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." MSG 17 Jesus said, "What a generation! No sense of God! No focus to your lives! How many times do I have to go over these things? How much longer do I have to put up with this? Bring the boy here." ESV 18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. MSG 18 He ordered the afflicting demon out - and it was out, gone. From that moment on the boy was well. ESV 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" MSG 19 When the disciples had Jesus off to themselves, they asked, "Why couldn't we throw it out?" ESV 20 He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." MSG 20 "Because you're not yet taking God seriously," said Jesus. "The simple truth is that if you had a mere kernel of faith, a poppy seed, say, you would tell this mountain, 'Move!' and it would move. There is nothing you wouldn't be able to tackle."
