Matthew 17:22-27

ESV 22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, MSG 22 As they were regrouping in Galilee, Jesus told them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed to some people who want nothing to do with God. ESV 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day." And they were greatly distressed. MSG 23 They will murder him - and three days later he will be raised alive." The disciples felt terrible. ESV 24 When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, "Does your teacher not pay the tax?" MSG 24 When they arrived at Capernaum, the tax men came to Peter and asked, "Does your teacher pay taxes?" ESV 25 He said, "Yes." And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?" MSG 25 Peter said, "Of course." But as soon as they were in the house, Jesus confronted him. "Simon, what do you think? When a king levies taxes, who pays - his children or his subjects?" ESV 26 And when he said, "From others," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free. MSG 26 He answered, “His subjects.” Jesus said, “Then the children get off free, right? ESV 27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself." MSG 27 But so we don't upset them needlessly, go down to the lake, cast a hook, and pull in the first fish that bites. Open its mouth and you'll find a coin. Take it and give it to the tax men. It will be enough for both of us."
