CEB 1 Jesus responded by speaking again in parables: NIV 1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: CEB 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding party for his son. NIV 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. CEB 3 He sent his servants to call those invited to the wedding party. But they didn't want to come. NIV 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. CEB 4 Again he sent other servants and said to them, ‘Tell those who have been invited, "Look, the meal is all prepared. I've butchered the oxen and the fattened cattle. Now everything's ready. Come to the wedding party!" ' NIV 4 “Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’ CEB 5 But they paid no attention and went away—some to their fields, others to their businesses. NIV 5 “But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. CEB 6 The rest of them grabbed his servants, abused them, and killed them. NIV 6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. CEB 7 “The king was angry. He sent his soldiers to destroy those murderers and set their city on fire. NIV 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. CEB 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding party is prepared, but those who were invited weren't worthy. NIV 8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. CEB 9 Therefore, go to the roads on the edge of town and invite everyone you find to the wedding party.' NIV 9 So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ CEB 10 “Then those servants went to the roads and gathered everyone they found, both evil and good. The wedding party was full of guests. NIV 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. CEB 11 Now when the king came in and saw the guests, he spotted a man who wasn't wearing wedding clothes. NIV 11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. CEB 12 He said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' But he was speechless. NIV 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless. CEB 13 Then the king said to his servants, ‘Tie his hands and feet and throw him out into the farthest darkness. People there will be weeping and grinding their teeth.' NIV 13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ CEB 14 "Many people are invited, but few people are chosen." NIV 14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”
