Matthew 25:14-30

MSG 14 "It's also like a man going off on an extended trip. He called his servants together and delegated responsibilities. NIV 14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. MSG 15 To one he gave five thousand dollars, to another two thousand, to a third one thousand, depending on their abilities. Then he left. NIV 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. MSG 16 Right off, the first servant went to work and doubled his master's investment. NIV 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. MSG 17 The second did the same. NIV 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. MSG 18 But the man with the single thousand dug a hole and carefully buried his master's money. NIV 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. MSG 19 "After a long absence, the master of those three servants came back and settled up with them. NIV 19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. MSG 20 The one given five thousand dollars showed him how he had doubled his investment. NIV 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’ MSG 21 His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.' NIV 21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ MSG 22 "The servant with the two thousand showed how he also had doubled his master's investment. NIV 22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’ MSG 23 His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.' NIV 23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ MSG 24 "The servant given one thousand said, 'Master, I know you have high standards and hate careless ways, that you demand the best and make no allowances for error. NIV 24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. MSG 25 I was afraid I might disappoint you, so I found a good hiding place and secured your money. Here it is, safe and sound down to the last cent.' NIV 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ MSG 26 "The master was furious. 'That's a terrible way to live! It's criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least? NIV 26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? MSG 27 The least you could have done would have been to invest the sum with the bankers, where at least I would have gotten a little interest. NIV 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. MSG 28 "'Take the thousand and give it to the one who risked the most. And get rid of this "play-it-safe" who won't go out on a limb. NIV 28 “ ‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. MSG 29 NIV 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. MSG 30 Throw him out into utter darkness.' NIV 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
