Matthew 27:1-26

CSB 1 When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. NIV 1 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. CSB 2 After tying Him up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate, the governor. NIV 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor. CSB 3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. NIV 3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. CSB 4 "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood," he said. "What's that to us?" they said. "See to it yourself!" NIV 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.” CSB 5 So he threw the silver into the sanctuary and departed. Then he went and hanged himself. NIV 5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. CSB 6 The chief priests took the silver and said, "It's not lawful to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money." NIV 6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” CSB 7 So they conferred together and bought the potter's field with it as a burial place for foreigners. NIV 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. CSB 8 Therefore that field has been called "Blood Field" to this day. NIV 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. CSB 9 Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took the 30 pieces of silver, the price of Him whose price was set by the sons of Israel, NIV 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, CSB 10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me. NIV 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.” CSB 11 Now Jesus stood before the governor. "Are You the King of the Jews?" the governor asked Him. Jesus answered, "You have said it." NIV 11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. CSB 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He didn't answer. NIV 12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. CSB 13 Then Pilate said to Him, "Don't You hear how much they are testifying against You?" NIV 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” CSB 14 But He didn't answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed. NIV 14 But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor. CSB 15 At the festival the governor's custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted. NIV 15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. CSB 16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. NIV 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus Barabbas. CSB 17 So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Who is it you want me to release for you-Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Messiah?" NIV 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” CSB 18 For he knew they had handed Him over because of envy. NIV 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him. CSB 19 While he was sitting on the judge's bench, his wife sent word to him, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I've suffered terribly in a dream because of Him!" NIV 19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.” CSB 20 The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus. NIV 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. CSB 21 The governor asked them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" "Barabbas!" they answered. NIV 21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they answered. CSB 22 Pilate asked them, "What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Messiah?" They all answered, "Crucify Him!" NIV 22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” CSB 23 Then he said, "Why? What has He done wrong?" But they kept shouting, "Crucify Him!" all the more. NIV 23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” CSB 24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, "I am innocent of this man's blood. See to it yourselves!" NIV 24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!” CSB 25 All the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!" NIV 25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!” CSB 26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified. NIV 26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
