1 El pueblo confiesa sus pecados<br />El 31 de octubre<br /> el pueblo volvió a reunirse en asamblea. Esta vez ayunaron, se vistieron de tela áspera y se echaron polvo sobre la cabeza.

2 Los de ascendencia israelita se separaron de todos los extranjeros para confesar sus propios pecados y los pecados de sus antepasados.

3 Permanecieron de pie en el mismo lugar durante tres horas<br /> mientras se les leía en voz alta el libro de la ley del Señor<br /> su Dios. Luego confesaron sus pecados y adoraron al Señor<br /> su Dios durante tres horas más.

4 Los levitas —Jesúa, Bani, Cadmiel, Sebanías, Buni, Serebías, Bani y Quenaní— estuvieron de pie en la escalera de los levitas y clamaron al Señor<br /> su Dios en voz alta.

5 Luego los jefes de los levitas —Jesúa, Cadmiel, Bani, Hasabnías, Serebías, Hodías, Sebanías y Petaías— llamaron al pueblo: «¡Levántense y alaben al Señor<br /> su Dios, porque él vive desde la eternidad hasta la eternidad!». Entonces oraron:<br />«¡Que tu glorioso nombre sea alabado! ¡Que sea exaltado por sobre toda bendición y alabanza!

6 »Solo tú eres el Señor<br />. Tú hiciste el firmamento, los cielos y todas las estrellas; hiciste la tierra, los mares y todo lo que hay en ellos. Tú los preservas a todos, y los ángeles del cielo te adoran.

7 »Eres el Señor<br /> Dios, quien eligió a Abram y lo sacó de Ur de los caldeos y le dio un nuevo nombre, Abraham.

8 Cuando demostró ser fiel, hiciste un pacto con él para darle a él y a sus descendientes la tierra de los cananeos, de los hititas, de los amorreos, de los ferezeos, de los jebuseos y de los gergeseos; y has cumplido lo que prometiste, porque tú siempre eres fiel a tu palabra.

9 »Tú viste la miseria de nuestros antepasados en Egipto y escuchaste sus lamentos cuando estaban junto al mar Rojo.

10 Realizaste señales milagrosas y maravillas contra el faraón, sus funcionarios y su pueblo, porque tú sabías con cuánta arrogancia trataban a nuestros antepasados. Tú tienes una gloriosa reputación que jamás ha sido olvidada.

11 ¡Dividiste el mar para que tu pueblo pudiera cruzarlo por tierra seca! Luego arrojaste a sus perseguidores a las profundidades del mar. Se hundieron como piedras en aguas turbulentas.

12 Guiaste a nuestros antepasados mediante una columna de nube durante el día y una columna de fuego durante la noche para que pudieran encontrar el camino.

13 »Bajaste al monte Sinaí y les hablaste desde el cielo. Les diste ordenanzas e instrucciones justas, y decretos y mandatos buenos.

14 Les diste instrucciones acerca de tu sagrado día de descanso. Además, por medio de tu siervo Moisés, les ordenaste que obedecieran todos tus mandatos, decretos e instrucciones.

15 »Les diste pan del cielo cuando tenían hambre y agua de la roca cuando tenían sed. Les ordenaste que fueran y tomaran posesión de la tierra que habías jurado darles.

16 »Sin embargo, nuestros antepasados fueron arrogantes y tercos, y no prestaron ninguna atención a tus mandatos.

17 Se negaron a obedecerte y no se acordaron de los milagros que habías hecho a favor de ellos. En cambio, se pusieron tercos y nombraron a un líder para que los llevara de regreso a su esclavitud en Egipto; pero tú eres Dios de perdón, bondadoso y misericordioso, lento para enojarte y rico en amor inagotable. No los abandonaste,

18 ni siquiera cuando se hicieron un ídolo en forma de becerro y dijeron: “¡Este es tu dios que te sacó de Egipto!”. Cometieron terribles blasfemias.

19 »En tu gran misericordia no los abandonaste para que murieran en el desierto. La columna de nube todavía los guiaba de día, y la columna de fuego les mostraba el camino durante la noche.

20 Enviaste tu buen Espíritu para que les enseñara, y no dejaste de alimentarlos con maná del cielo ni de darles agua para su sed.

21 Durante cuarenta años los sustentaste en el desierto, y nada les faltó. ¡No se les desgastó la ropa, ni se les hincharon los pies!

22 »Luego ayudaste a nuestros antepasados a conquistar reinos y naciones, y colocaste a tu pueblo en todos los rincones de la tierra.<br /> Se apoderaron de la tierra del rey Sehón de Hesbón, y de la tierra del rey Og de Basán.

23 Hiciste que sus descendientes fueran tan numerosos como las estrellas del cielo y los llevaste a la tierra que habías prometido a sus antepasados.

24 »Entraron y tomaron posesión de la tierra. Tú sometiste naciones enteras delante de ellos. ¡Hasta los cananeos, que habitaban esa tierra, se sintieron impotentes! Tu pueblo pudo hacer lo que quiso con esas naciones y con sus reyes.

25 Nuestros antepasados conquistaron ciudades fortificadas y tierras fértiles. Se apoderaron de casas llenas de cosas buenas, con cisternas ya cavadas y viñedos y olivares, además de frutales en abundancia. De modo que comieron hasta saciarse y engordaron y disfrutaron de todas tus bendiciones.

26 »Sin embargo, a pesar de todo esto, fueron desobedientes y se rebelaron contra ti. Dieron la espalda a tu ley, mataron a tus profetas, quienes les advertían que volvieran a ti, y cometieron terribles blasfemias.

27 Así que los entregaste en manos de sus enemigos, quienes los hicieron sufrir; pero en sus momentos de angustia clamaron a ti, y desde el cielo los escuchaste. En tu gran misericordia, les enviaste libertadores que los rescataron de sus enemigos.

28 »No obstante, apenas tenían paz, volvían a cometer maldades ante tus ojos, y una vez más permitiste que sus enemigos los conquistaran. Sin embargo, cada vez que tu pueblo volvía y nuevamente clamaba a ti por ayuda, desde el cielo tú lo escuchabas una vez más. En tu maravillosa misericordia, los rescataste muchas veces.

29 »Les advertías que regresaran a tu ley, pero ellos se volvieron orgullosos y obstinados, y desobedecieron tus mandatos. No siguieron tus ordenanzas que dan vida a quienes las obedecen. Tercamente te dieron la espalda y se negaron a escuchar.

30 En tu amor fuiste paciente con ellos durante muchos años. Enviaste tu Espíritu, quien les advertía por medio de los profetas. ¡Pero aun así no quisieron escuchar! Entonces nuevamente permitiste que los pueblos de la tierra los conquistaran;

31 pero en tu gran misericordia no los destruiste por completo ni los abandonaste para siempre. ¡Qué Dios tan bondadoso y misericordioso eres tú!

32 »Ahora, Dios nuestro —Dios grande, poderoso y temible que cumple su pacto de amor inagotable—, no permitas que todas las privaciones que hemos sufrido te parezcan insignificantes. Grandes dificultades cayeron sobre nosotros, nuestros reyes, nuestros líderes, nuestros sacerdotes, nuestros profetas y nuestros antepasados —todo tu pueblo—, desde los días cuando los reyes de Asiria por primera vez nos vencieron hasta el día de hoy.

33 Cada vez que nos castigaste actuaste con justicia. Hemos pecado grandemente, y nos diste solo lo que merecíamos.

34 Nuestros reyes, líderes, sacerdotes y antepasados no obedecieron tu ley ni prestaron atención a las advertencias de tus mandatos y leyes.

35 Aun cuando tenían su propio reino no te sirvieron, a pesar de que derramaste tu bondad sobre ellos. Les diste un territorio grande y fértil, pero ellos se negaron a abandonar su perversidad.

36 »Por eso, ¡hoy somos esclavos en esta tierra de abundancia que diste a nuestros antepasados para que la disfrutaran! Somos esclavos aquí en esta buena tierra.

37 Los abundantes productos agrícolas de esta tierra se amontonan en las manos de los reyes que has puesto sobre nosotros por causa de nuestros pecados. Ellos ejercen su poder sobre nosotros y nuestros animales. Les servimos según su antojo, y pasamos por mucho sufrimiento».

38 El pueblo decide obedecer<br />Entonces el pueblo respondió: «En vista de todo esto,<br /> hacemos una promesa solemne y la ponemos por escrito. En este documento sellado están los nombres de nuestros líderes, levitas y sacerdotes».

1 On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads.

2 Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors.

3 They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God.

4 Standing on the stairs of the Levites were Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Kenani. They cried out with loud voices to the LORD their God.

5 And the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah—said: “Stand up and praise the LORD your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting. ” “Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise.

6 You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.

7 “You are the LORD God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and named him Abraham.

8 You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites. You have kept your promise because you are righteous.

9 “You saw the suffering of our ancestors in Egypt; you heard their cry at the Red Sea.

10 You sent signs and wonders against Pharaoh, against all his officials and all the people of his land, for you knew how arrogantly the Egyptians treated them. You made a name for yourself, which remains to this day.

11 You divided the sea before them, so that they passed through it on dry ground, but you hurled their pursuers into the depths, like a stone into mighty waters.

12 By day you led them with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire to give them light on the way they were to take.

13 “You came down on Mount Sinai; you spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and laws that are just and right, and decrees and commands that are good.

14 You made known to them your holy Sabbath and gave them commands, decrees and laws through your servant Moses.

15 In their hunger you gave them bread from heaven and in their thirst you brought them water from the rock; you told them to go in and take possession of the land you had sworn with uplifted hand to give them.

16 “But they, our ancestors, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and they did not obey your commands.

17 They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them,

18 even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf and said, ‘This is your god, who brought you up out of Egypt,’ or when they committed awful blasphemies.

19 “Because of your great compassion you did not abandon them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take.

20 You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.

21 For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.

22 “You gave them kingdoms and nations, allotting to them even the remotest frontiers. They took over the country of Sihon king of Heshbon and the country of Og king of Bashan.

23 You made their children as numerous as the stars in the sky, and you brought them into the land that you told their parents to enter and possess.

24 Their children went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites, who lived in the land; you gave the Canaanites into their hands, along with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with them as they pleased.

25 They captured fortified cities and fertile land; they took possession of houses filled with all kinds of good things, wells already dug, vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees in abundance. They ate to the full and were well-nourished; they reveled in your great goodness.

26 “But they were disobedient and rebelled against you; they turned their backs on your law. They killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you; they committed awful blasphemies.

27 So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.

28 “But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time.

29 “You warned them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said, ‘The person who obeys them will live by them.’ Stubbornly they turned their backs on you, became stiff-necked and refused to listen.

30 For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.

31 But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.

32 “Now therefore, our God, the great God, mighty and awesome, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes—the hardship that has come on us, on our kings and leaders, on our priests and prophets, on our ancestors and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today.

33 In all that has happened to us, you have remained righteous; you have acted faithfully, while we acted wickedly.

34 Our kings, our leaders, our priests and our ancestors did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the statutes you warned them to keep.

35 Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you or turn from their evil ways.

36 “But see, we are slaves today, slaves in the land you gave our ancestors so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces.

37 Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.

38 “In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement, putting it in writing, and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it.”
