Psalm 51

CEB 1 Have mercy on me, God, according to your faithful love! Wipe away my wrongdoings according to your great compassion! NIV 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. CEB 2 Wash me completely clean of my guilt; purify me from my sin! NIV 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. CEB 3 Because I know my wrongdoings, my sin is always right in front of me. NIV 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. CEB 4 I've sinned against you—you alone. I've committed evil in your sight. That's why you are justified when you render your verdict, completely correct when you issue your judgment. NIV 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. CEB 5 Yes, I was born in guilt, in sin, from the moment my mother conceived me. NIV 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. CEB 6 And yes, you want truth in the most hidden places; you teach me wisdom in the most secret space. NIV 6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. CEB 7 Purify me with hyssop and I will be clean; wash me and I will be whiter than snow. NIV 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. CEB 8 Let me hear joy and celebration again; let the bones you crushed rejoice once more. NIV 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. CEB 9 Hide your face from my sins; wipe away all my guilty deeds! NIV 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. CEB 10 Create a clean heart for me, God; put a new, faithful spirit deep inside me! NIV 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. CEB 11 Please don't throw me out of your presence; please don't take your holy spirit away from me. NIV 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. CEB 12 Return the joy of your salvation to me and sustain me with a willing spirit. NIV 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. CEB 13 Then I will teach wrongdoers your ways, and sinners will come back to you. NIV 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. CEB 14 Deliver me from violence, God, God of my salvation, so that my tongue can sing of your righteousness. NIV 14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. CEB 15 Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. NIV 15 Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. CEB 16 You don't want sacrifices. If I gave an entirely burned offering, you wouldn't be pleased. NIV 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. CEB 17 A broken spirit is my sacrifice, God. You won't despise a heart, God, that is broken and crushed. NIV 17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. CEB 18 Do good things for Zion by your favor. Rebuild Jerusalem's walls. NIV 18 May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. CEB 19 Then you will again want sacrifices of righteousness— entirely burned offerings and complete offerings. Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar. NIV 19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
