Psalm 58

CEB 1 Do you really speak what is right, you gods? Do you really judge humans fairly? NIV 1 Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge people with equity? CEB 2 No: in your hearts you plan injustice; your hands do violence on the earth. NIV 2 No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth. CEB 3 The wicked backslide from the womb; liars go astray from birth. NIV 3 Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies. CEB 4 Their venom is like a snake's venom— like a deaf cobra's—one that shuts its ears NIV 4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears, CEB 5 so it can't hear the snake charmer's voice or the spells of a skillful enchanter. NIV 5 that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be. CEB 6 God, break their teeth out of their mouths! Tear out the lions' jawbones, LORD! NIV 6 Break the teeth in their mouths, O God; LORD, tear out the fangs of those lions! CEB 7 Let them dissolve like water flowing away. When they bend the bow, let their arrows be like headless shafts. NIV 7 Let them vanish like water that flows away; when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short. CEB 8 Like the snail that dissolves into slime, like a woman's stillborn child, let them never see the sun. NIV 8 May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along, like a stillborn child that never sees the sun. CEB 9 Before your pots feel the thorns, whether green or burned up, God will sweep them away! NIV 9 Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns— whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away. CEB 10 But the righteous will rejoice when they see vengeance done, when they wash their feet in the blood of the wicked. NIV 10 The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked. CEB 11 Then it will be said: "Yes, there is a reward for the righteous! Yes, there is a God who judges people on the earth." NIV 11 Then people will say, “Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth.”
