44 The next1Sabbathnearly the wholecityassembled to hear the word of the Lord.

But when 2the Jewssaw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the thingsspoken by Paul, and were blaspheming.

Paul and Barnabasspoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you 3first; since you repudiate it and judgeyourselvesunworthy* of eternallife, behold, 4we are turning to the Gentiles.

"For so the Lord has commanded us, '5I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A 6LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING*SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.' "

When the Gentilesheard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying7the word of the Lord; and as many as 8had beenappointed to eternallifebelieved.

And 9the word of the Lord was being spreadthrough the wholeregion.

But 10the Jewsincited the 11devoutwomen12of prominence and the leadingmen of the city, and instigated a persecutionagainstPaul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.

But 13they shookoff the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to 14Iconium.

And the disciples were continually 15filled with joy and with the HolySpirit.
