5Then He pouredwater into the basin, and began to 1wash the disciples'feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

So He came to SimonPeter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?"

Jesusanswered and said to him, "What I do you do not realizenow, but you will understand2hereafter*."

Petersaid to Him, "Never* shall You wash my feet!" Jesusanswered him, "3If I do not wash you, 4you havenopart with Me."

SimonPetersaid to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."

Jesussaid to him, "He who has bathedneedsonly** to wash his feet, but is completelyclean; and 5you are clean, but not all of you."

For 6He knew the one who was betraying Him; for thisreason He said, "Not all of you are clean."

Sowhen He had washed their feet, and 7taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you knowwhat I have done to you?

"You call Me 8Teacher and 9Lord; and you are right, for so I am.

"If I then, 10the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you alsoought to washoneanother'sfeet.

"For I gave you 11an example that you also should do as I did to you.

"Truly, truly, I say to you, 12a slave is not greater than his master, nor is 13one who is sentgreater than the one who sent him.

"If you knowthesethings, you are 14blessedif you do them.

"15I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have 16chosen; but it is 17that the Scripture may be fulfilled, '18HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEELAGAINST ME.'

"From now on 19I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that 20I am He.

"Truly, truly, I say to you, 21he who receiveswhomever* I sendreceives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."
