Psalm 85:1-10

1 Ein Psalm der Kinder Korah, vorzusingen. HERR, der du bist vormals gnädig gewesen deinem Lande und hast die Gefangenen Jakobs erlöst;

2 der du die Missetat vormals vergeben hast deinem Volk und alle ihre Sünde bedeckt (sela);

3 der du vormals hast allen deinen Zorn aufgehoben und dich gewendet von dem Grimm deines Zorns:

4 tröste uns, Gott, unser Heiland, und laß ab von deiner Ungnade über uns!

5 Willst du denn ewiglich über uns zürnen und deinen Zorn gehen lassen für und für?

6 Willst du uns denn nicht wieder erquicken, daß sich dein Volk über dich freuen möge?

7 HERR, erzeige uns deine Gnade und hilf uns!

8 Ach, daß ich hören sollte, was Gott der HERR redet; daß er Frieden zusagte seinem Volk und seinen Heiligen, auf daß sie nicht auf eine Torheit geraten!

9 Doch ist ja seine Hilfe nahe denen, die ihn fürchten, daß in unserm Lande Ehre wohne;

10 daß Güte und Treue einander begegnen, Gerechtigkeit und Friede sich küssen;

Psalm 85:1-10 Meaning and Commentary

To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. This psalm is generally thought to have been composed after the return of the Jews from their captivity in Babylon; and yet when they were in some distress from their neighbours, either in the times of Ezra and Nehemiah, or in the times of Antiochus; but then this deliverance from captivity must be considered as typical of redemption by Christ; for as the title of the Syriac version is, "it is a prophecy concerning Christ;" it speaks of his dwelling in the land, of his salvation being near, and of the glory of the divine perfections as displayed in it; and perhaps some parts of it may respect the conversion of the Jews in the latter day; and Aben Ezra and Kimchi say, it is concerning the captivity of Babylon, yet also of their present captivity.
