7
Dear friends,1 I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.2 This old command is the message you have heard.
8
Yet I am writing you a new command;3 its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing4 and the true light5 is already shining.69
Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother7 is still in the darkness.810
Whoever loves his brother lives in the light,9 and there is nothing in hima to make him stumble.1011
But whoever hates his brother11 is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness;12 he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.1312
I write to you, dear children,14 because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.1513
I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning.16 I write to you, young men, because you have overcome17 the evil one.18 I write to you, dear children,19 because you have known the Father.
14
I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning.20 I write to you, young men, because you are strong,21 and the word of God22 lives in you,23 and you have overcome the evil one.24
15
Do not love the world or anything in the world.25 If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.2616
For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man,27 the lust of his eyes28 and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world.
17
The world and its desires pass away,29 but the man who does the will of God30 lives forever.
