Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands,1 just as we told you,

so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders2 and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
The Coming of the Lord
13 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant3 about those who fall asleep,4 or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.5 14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again6 and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.7 15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord,8 will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.9 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,10 with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel11 and with the trumpet call of God,12 and the dead in Christ will rise first.13 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left14 will be caught up together with them in the clouds15 to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord16 forever. 18 Therefore encourage each other17 with these words.Scripture quoted by permission.
