Luke 9:52 Meaning and Commentary

Luke 9:52

And sent messengers before his face
Who very likely were his two disciples, James and John, since they so highly resented the ill treatment their master met with from the Samaritans:

and they went;
before him:

and entered into a village of the Samaritans;
or "city", as the Vulgate Latin, Persic, and Ethiopic versions read, and so one of Stephens's copies; which lay in the way from Galilee to Judea, where the disciples had been forbid to enter, that is, in order to preach, ( Matthew 10:5 )

To make ready for him;
to prepare a lodging, and proper food for him and his disciples, as they passed on in their journey, for his intention was not to make any stay there.

Luke 9:52 In-Context

51 And it came about that when the days were near for him to be taken up, his face was turned to go to Jerusalem,
52 And he sent men before: and they came to a small town of Samaria to make ready for him.
53 But they would not have him there, because he was clearly going to Jerusalem.
54 And when his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, Lord, may we send fire from heaven and put an end to them?
