Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!1 In his great mercy2 he has given us new birth3 into a living hope4 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,54
and into an inheritance6 that can never perish, spoil or fade7--kept in heaven for you,85
who through faith are shielded by God's power9 until the coming of the salvation10 that is ready to be revealed11 in the last time.
In this you greatly rejoice,12 though now for a little while13 you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.147
These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire15--may be proved genuine16 and may result in praise, glory and honor17 when Jesus Christ is revealed.188
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him19 and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.2010
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke21 of the grace that was to come to you,22 searched intently and with the greatest care,2311
trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ24 in them was pointing when he predicted25 the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,26 when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you27 by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.28 Even angels long to look into these things.
