Jeshuruna1 grew fat2 and kicked; filled with food, he became heavy and sleek. He abandoned3 the God who made him and rejected the Rock4 his Savior.
They made him jealous5 with their foreign gods and angered6 him with their detestable idols.
They sacrificed7 to demons,8 which are not God-- gods they had not known,9 gods that recently appeared,10 gods your fathers did not fear.
You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot11 the God who gave you birth.
The LORD saw this and rejected them12 because he was angered by his sons and daughters.1320
"I will hide my face14 from them," he said, "and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation,15 children who are unfaithful.1621
They made me jealous17 by what is no god and angered me with their worthless idols.18 I will make them envious by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.1922
For a fire has been kindled by my wrath,20 one that burns to the realm of deathb below.21 It will devour22 the earth and its harvests23 and set afire the foundations of the mountains.2423
"I will heap calamities25 upon them and spend my arrows26 against them.
I will send wasting famine27 against them, consuming pestilence28 and deadly plague;29 I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,30 the venom of vipers31 that glide in the dust.3225
In the street the sword will make them childless; in their homes terror33 will reign.34 Young men and young women will perish, infants and gray-haired men.3526
I said I would scatter36 them and blot out their memory from mankind,3727
but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy, lest the adversary misunderstand38 and say, 'Our hand has triumphed; the LORD has not done all this.' "3928
They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment40 in them.
