When Israel1 saw the sons of Joseph,2 he asked, "Who are these?"
"They are the sons God has given me here,"3 Joseph said to his father. Then Israel said, "Bring them to me so I may bless4 them."
Now Israel's eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see.5 So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them6 and embraced them.711
Israel8 said to Joseph, "I never expected to see your face again,9 and now God has allowed me to see your children too."1012
Then Joseph removed them from Israel's knees11 and bowed down with his face to the ground.1213
And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel's left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel's right hand,13 and brought them close to him.
But Israel14 reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim's head,15 though he was the younger,16 and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh's head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.1715
Then he blessed18 Joseph and said, "May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,19 the God who has been my shepherd20 all my life to this day,
the Angel21 who has delivered me from all harm22 --may he bless23 these boys.24 May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,25 and may they increase greatly upon the earth."2617
When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand27 on Ephraim's head28 he was displeased; so he took hold of his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head.
Joseph said to him, "No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head."2919
But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great.30 Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he,31 and his descendants will become a group of nations.32"
He blessed33 them that day34 and said, "In youra name will Israel35 pronounce this blessing:36 'May God make you like Ephraim37 and Manasseh.38' " So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.
