They are now dead,1 they live no more; those departed spirits2 do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin;3 you wiped out all memory of them.415
You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; you have enlarged the nation.5 You have gained glory for yourself; you have extended all the borders6 of the land.
LORD, they came to you in their distress;7 when you disciplined8 them, they could barely whisper9 a prayer.a17
As a woman with child and about to give birth10 writhes and cries out in her pain, so were we in your presence, O LORD.
We were with child, we writhed in pain, but we gave birth11 to wind. We have not brought salvation12 to the earth; we have not given birth to people of the world.1319
But your dead14 will live; their bodies will rise. You who dwell in the dust,15 wake up and shout for joy. Your dew16 is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give birth to her dead.17
