It will not be quenched1 night and day; its smoke will rise forever.2 From generation to generation3 it will lie desolate;4 no one will ever pass through it again.
The desert owla5 and screech owlb will possess it; the great owlc and the raven6 will nest there. God will stretch out over Edom7 the measuring line of chaos8 and the plumb line9 of desolation.
Her nobles will have nothing there to be called a kingdom, all her princes10 will vanish11 away.
Thorns12 will overrun her citadels, nettles and brambles her strongholds.13 She will become a haunt for jackals,14 a home for owls.1514
Desert creatures16 will meet with hyenas,17 and wild goats will bleat to each other; there the night creatures18 will also repose and find for themselves places of rest.
The owl will nest there and lay eggs, she will hatch them, and care for her young under the shadow of her wings;19 there also the falcons20 will gather, each with its mate.
Look in the scroll21 of the LORD and read: None of these will be missing,22 not one will lack her mate. For it is his mouth23 that has given the order,24 and his Spirit will gather them together.
He allots their portions;25 his hand distributes them by measure. They will possess it forever and dwell there from generation to generation.26
