Listen1 to me, you islands;2 hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born3 the LORD called4 me; from my birth he has made mention of my name.52
He made my mouth6 like a sharpened sword,7 in the shadow of his hand8 he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow9 and concealed me in his quiver.
He said to me, "You are my servant,10 Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.11"
But I said, "I have labored to no purpose; I have spent my strength in vain12 and for nothing. Yet what is due me is in the LORD's hand,13 and my reward14 is with my God."155
And now the LORD says-- he who formed me in the womb16 to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel17 to himself, for I am honored18 in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength19--
he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant20 to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept.21 I will also make you a light22 for the Gentiles,23 that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."247
This is what the LORD says-- the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel25-- to him who was despised26 and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers: "Kings27 will see you and rise up, princes will see and bow down,28 because of the LORD, who is faithful,29 the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen30 you."
This is what the LORD says: "In the time of my favor31 I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you;32 I will keep33 you and will make you to be a covenant for the people,34 to restore the land35 and to reassign its desolate inheritances,369
to say to the captives,37 'Come out,' and to those in darkness,38 'Be free!' "They will feed beside the roads and find pasture on every barren hill.39
