This is the word of the LORD to Jeremiah concerning the drought:12
"Judah mourns,2 her cities languish; they wail for the land, and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.
The nobles send their servants for water; they go to the cisterns but find no water.3 They return with their jars unfilled; dismayed and despairing, they cover their heads.44
The ground is cracked because there is no rain in the land;5 the farmers are dismayed and cover their heads.
Even the doe in the field deserts her newborn fawn because there is no grass.66
Wild donkeys stand on the barren heights7 and pant like jackals; their eyesight fails for lack of pasture."87
Although our sins testify9 against us, O LORD, do something for the sake of your name.10 For our backsliding11 is great; we have sinned12 against you.
O Hope13 of Israel, its Savior14 in times of distress,15 why are you like a stranger in the land, like a traveler who stays only a night?
Why are you like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save?16 You are among17 us, O LORD, and we bear your name;18 do not forsake19 us!
