"Though I cry, 'I've been wronged!' I get no response;1 though I call for help,2 there is no justice.3

He has blocked my way so I cannot pass;4 he has shrouded my paths in darkness.5

He has stripped6 me of my honor7 and removed the crown from my head.8

He tears me down9 on every side till I am gone; he uproots my hope10 like a tree.11

His anger12 burns against me; he counts me among his enemies.13

His troops advance in force;14 they build a siege ramp15 against me and encamp around my tent.16

"He has alienated my brothers17 from me; my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.18

My kinsmen have gone away; my friends19 have forgotten me.

My guests20 and my maidservants21 count me a stranger; they look upon me as an alien.

I summon my servant, but he does not answer, though I beg him with my own mouth.

My breath is offensive to my wife; I am loathsome22 to my own brothers.

Even the little boys23 scorn me; when I appear, they ridicule me.24

All my intimate friends25 detest me;26 those I love have turned against me.27

I am nothing but skin and bones;28 I have escaped with only the skin of my teeth.a
