Then the Israelites did evil1 in the eyes of the LORD2 and served the Baals.312
They forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods4 of the peoples around them.5 They provoked6 the LORD to anger713
because they forsook8 him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.914
In his anger10 against Israel the LORD handed them over11 to raiders who plundered12 them. He sold them13 to their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.1415
Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the LORD was against them15 to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.1616
Then the LORD raised up judges,a17 who saved18 them out of the hands of these raiders.
Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted19 themselves to other gods20 and worshiped them.21 Unlike their fathers, they quickly turned22 from the way in which their fathers had walked, the way of obedience to the LORD's commands.2318
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved24 them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD had compassion25 on them as they groaned26 under those who oppressed and afflicted27 them.
But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt28 than those of their fathers,29 following other gods and serving and worshiping them.30 They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn31 ways.
