And behold, 1two of them were going that veryday to a villagenamedEmmaus, which was aabout sevenmiles from Jerusalem.
And they were talking with eachotheraboutallthesethings which had takenplace.
15While they were talking and discussing, JesusHimselfapproached and began traveling with them.
But 2their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.
And He said to them, "What are thesewords that you are exchanging with oneanother as you are walking?" And they stoodstill, lookingsad.
18One of them, namedCleopas, answered and said to Him, "Are You bthe onlyonevisitingJerusalem and unaware of the things which have happenedhere in thesedays?"
And He said to them, "Whatthings?" And they said to Him, "The things about3Jesus the Nazarene, who was a 4prophetmighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people,
and how the chiefpriests and our 5rulersdelivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him.
"But we were hoping that it was He who was going to 6redeemIsrael. Indeed, besidesallthis, it is the thirddaysincethesethingshappened.
"But alsosomewomenamong us amazed us. 7When they were at the tombearly in the morning,
and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had alsoseen a vision of angelswhosaid that He was alive.
24"Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it justexactly as the womenalso had said; but Him they did not see."
And He said to them, "Ofoolishmen and slow of heart to believe in all that 8the prophets have spoken!26"9Was it not necessary for the cChrist to sufferthesethings and to enter into His glory?"27Thenbeginningdwith 10Moses and ewith all the 11prophets, He explained to them the things concerningHimself in all the Scriptures.
And they approached the villagewhere they were going, and 12He acted as though He were goingfarther.
But they urged Him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is getting towardevening, and the dayfis nownearlyover." So He went in to stay with them.
30When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and 13blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them.
31Then their 14eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from gtheir sight.
They said to oneanother, "hWere not our heartsburningwithin us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He 15was iexplaining the Scriptures to us?"
And they got up that veryhour and returned to Jerusalem, and 16foundgatheredtogether the eleven and 17thosewho were with them,
34saying, "18The Lord has reallyrisen and 19has appeared to Simon."
They began to relatejtheir experiences on the road and how20He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
While they were tellingthesethings, 21He Himselfstood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be to you."37
But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing22a spirit.
And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubtsarise in your khearts?39"23See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; 24touch Me and see, for a spirit does not haveflesh and bones as you see that I have."40
And when He had saidthis, He showed them His hands and His feet.
While they stilll25could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, "26Have you anythinghere to eat?"42
They gave Him a piece of a broiledfish;
and He took it and 27ate it before them.
44Now He said to them, "28These are My wordswhich I spoke to you while I was still with you, that allthings which are writtenabout Me in the 29Law of Moses and the Prophets and 30the Psalmsmust be fulfilled."45Then He 31opened their mminds to understand the Scriptures,
and He said to them, "32Thus it is written, that the nChrist would suffer and 33riseagain from the dead the thirdday,47and that 34repentanceofor forgiveness of sins would be proclaimedpin His name to 35all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.48"You are 36witnesses of thesethings.49"And behold, 37I am sendingforth the promise of My Father upon you; but 38you are to stay in the cityuntil you are clothed with power from on high."
