1 Woe to the city of blood,1 full of lies,2 full of plunder, never without victims! 2 The crack of whips, the clatter of wheels, galloping horses and jolting chariots! 3 Charging cavalry, flashing swords and glittering spears! Many casualties, piles of dead, bodies without number, people stumbling over the corpses3-- 4 all because of the wanton lust of a harlot, alluring, the mistress of sorceries,4 who enslaved nations by her prostitution5 and peoples by her witchcraft. 5 "I am against6 you," declares the LORD Almighty. "I will lift your skirts7 over your face. I will show the nations your nakedness8 and the kingdoms your shame. 6 I will pelt you with filth,9 I will treat you with contempt10 and make you a spectacle.11 7 All who see you will flee12 from you and say, 'Nineveh13 is in ruins14--who will mourn for her?'15 Where can I find anyone to comfort16 you?"Scripture quoted by permission.
