The LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting1 in the Desert of Sinai2 on the first day of the second month3 of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt.4 He said:
"Take a census5 of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families,6 listing every man by name,7 one by one.
You and Aaron8 are to number by their divisions all the men in Israel twenty years old or more9 who are able to serve in the army.104
One man from each tribe,11 each the head of his family,12 is to help you.135
These are the names14 of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben,15 Elizur son of Shedeur;166
from Simeon,17 Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;187
from Judah,19 Nahshon son of Amminadab;208
from Issachar,21 Nethanel son of Zuar;229
from Zebulun,23 Eliab son of Helon;2410
from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim,25 Elishama son of Ammihud;26 from Manasseh,27 Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;2811
from Benjamin,29 Abidan son of Gideoni;3012
from Dan,31 Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;3213
from Asher,33 Pagiel son of Ocran;3414
from Gad,35 Eliasaph son of Deuel;3615
from Naphtali,37 Ahira son of Enan.38"
These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders39 of their ancestral tribes.40 They were the heads of the clans of Israel.41
