Psalms 37:7-20

7 1Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; 2fret not yourself over the one who 3prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
8 4Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! 5Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
9 6For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall 7inherit the land.
10 In 8just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at 9his place, he will not be there.
11 But 10the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in 11abundant peace.
12 The wicked 12plots against the righteous and 13gnashes his teeth at him,
13 but the Lord 14laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his 15day is coming.
14 The wicked draw the sword and 16bend their bows to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose 17way is upright;
15 their sword shall enter their own heart, and their 18bows shall be broken.
16 19Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For 20the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the LORD 21upholds the righteous.
18 The LORD 22 knows the days of the blameless, and their 23heritage will remain forever;
19 they are not put to shame in evil times; in 24the days of famine they have abundance.
20 But the wicked will perish; the enemies of the LORD are like 25the glory of the pastures; they vanish--like 26smoke they vanish away.

Psalms 37:7-20 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 37

\\<<[A Psalm] of David>>\\. This psalm, it is very probable, was written at the same time, and upon the same occasion, with the former; and describes the different states of good and bad men; and is full of exhortations, instructions, and advice to the people of God; intermixed with various encouraging promises. A late learned writer {h} thinks it was written for Mephibosheth's consolation under Ziba's calumny. {h} Delaney's Life of King David, vol. 2. p. 219.
